What are the sweet smells of Easter in your home?

Ham Dinner - Easter ham with all the trimmings for Easter dinner.

I sit here as my ham is baking, topped with cola and brown sugar. The scent is amazing and makes me instantly think of Easter dinners long past. What is your typical dinner/brunch for the Easter holiday?Ours is pretty basic and simple. Baked ham, gravy, mashed potatoes, rolls, corn. We have so many sweets from the baskets that I don't bother doing "desserts". Later I will use some of the chocolates to melt down and dip strawberries in or put on top of cheesecake for desserts throughout the week.

The Easter traditions have changed a lot for me over the past few years. My family is no longer close, and I didn't even bother to cook today. But, I do remember the kind of Easter you describe. It all seems so long ago. Enjoy your day!

I was just talking to a friend about how my house has changed too through the years. I have teens now and holidays aren't as "festive" as they once were. We used to decorate for every holiday, always had lights for the holiday, no matter what the holiday was. It was always festive for days, sometimes weeks, as we prepared. Now, it happens with little fanfare. I miss those times. But I still have the teens to deal with and enjoy dinners. It won't be long before they're not around too.

My Easter traditions seem to have passed on with my grandparents two years ago. My mom loves Easter and it's her favorite holiday, but losing her dad so close to the holiday has dampened our holiday spirit. We just don't do the big family thing anymore. We each do our own thing now. Quite sad actually!

We had a lovely brung this morning. It included breakfast pizza, ham, bacon, muffins, potatoes, all kinds of juices, waffles, and fresh fruit. It was very yummy and the best thing was with everyone helping out, it was actually little work. I appreciated the fact that since I worked all night,my children and their families had it all ready when I got home this morning. It was a nice morning.

Sounds lovely and when it's a feast that everyone helps create together, makes it very nice for mum!

In my house we had ham and pineapple, with scalloped potatoes. Scalloped potatoes always remind me of my dad, rest his soul. He once told me my scalloped potatoes were just like his mother's. That to me is a super high compliment.

Do you put cheese in your scalloped potatoes? My mom used to make them with no cheese, just ham, potatoes, butter, flour and milk. I like them both ways.

We are always making a special Easter food. It's actually a Russian speciality but it's so good that Estonians have grabbed it from them (and not only the Orthodox Estonians!) It's pasha (pronounce: p-a-s-h-a, s and h separately, it's actually Easter in Russian). There are a lot of recepies, boiled and not boiled, I used an easier method this year. It's made of curd. For a 1 kg of curd goes 300 g butter, beaten up into foam with 300 g sugar. Then I added 6 egg yolks, one after one, vanilla sugar, a lot of raisins, candied orange peel, ground nuts and almonds, and mixed it all up with curd. At the end 300 g whipped cream went in. Then I lined a big sieve up with wet cheese-cloth and poured pasha into it. It was staying in refrigerator couple of days, so the water came out. The right day to eat it is Easter Sunday. I decorated it with chocolate... It's very, very good but, alas, gives a ton of extra calories.

This year my family has suffered through my unemployment so we didn't get to enjoy the usual aromas of Easter. We had leftover pork tenderloin, baked beans and mac n cheese. A friend came by around 9 pm on her way home and gave me some a ham and a squash casserole (my favorite!). It was a genuinely sweet move on her part, as I lost my grandparents two years ago and that's where I would get to enjoy those items on Easter. My husband and daughter do not eat squash, so the little casserole she brought for me will do me for two meals! :-) As far as sweets, well we didn't enjoy anything other than sweet tea. My 15-year-old was quite disappointed that the Easter Bunny didn't leave her any candy, but then again she knows we're broke! Thank goodness it's not Christmas...it would have broken my heart!

I'm so sorry to hear you suffered a bit through the holiday. I understand the pain of not having as the Christmas before last I was under the same stresses, not a cent to my name and barely making ends meet as I was waiting on disability from my work. End results though were wonderful because we may not have had a ton of gifts, but we each made something from things we had around the house and it meant so much. I made each of my kids a cd clock with pictures from their hockey team. Cost me literally $10 for all 3 and even that I had to turn in some bottles for deposits to pay! LOL But we all loved it so much because we knew we had each other. Something that we were earlier forced to think we may not have as I battled cancer.

Oh wow lucky you, although I do not like coke and never had any of my meals cooked with coke in them. Our typical meal for Easter is fish we have it different ways but we had it this year done in coconut milk it was wonderful, and we cooked it on the hot plate, and then we have a small dessert after our dinner our dessert was a chocolate mud cake which we all enjoyed.

We used to create really neat desserts too. One year we did easter basket cupcakes. We've done a lamb cake and a bunny cake. My kids loved making the dessert the day or 2 before and would bring it out so proud. Lord... I'm old. I miss those times with my kids. Holidays really make me realize how much I miss they "little kid" years and how much fun we used to have. Isn't it funny? I love them now, don't get me wrong. But I miss them small and so intrigued with life. Now they just know it all about life! lol But gotta love them anyways.

We had Easter dinner at a relative's house, so I didn't have the regular food cooking at home. I did make some cinnamon rolls for the kids for a breakfast treat though. That left the house smelling really nice all day. :)

Ours has to be the basket of spring flowers that we bring in the home,, Easter Sunday we go out for the day somewhere and have a meal out. Thats our treat. What nicer than having a meal cooked for you then going for a walk in the country or down to the coast somewhere! Lynn-Marie

To be honest, we never have a specific Easter dinner. I made Mexican beans and rice for dinner tonight! On Easter Sunday, I'm normally too stuffed full of chocolate to even eat a proper dinner, maybe just a salad or something?

Today there were no Easter aromas in my house!!! We went to our daughter's for brunch and I did NO cooking...it was very weird!!! I did all the fruit and made devonshire sauce for dipping strawberries...I also did the veggie tray and the dips for it..so there was no inticing aroma from a turkey, ham, duck, roast or lamb...It was probably a first!!! We had a wonderful little brunch though..my son in law is a great waffle and pancake maker..so he wowed us with his terrific pancakes made in cute Easter shapes for the kids..He made a homemade syrup...and I had the devonshire and strawberries so we could chose a topping...then we had fresh crab and shrimp...yummm.... as my grandkids love seafood!! We had homemade cocktail sauce that I made for the seafood and it was all wonderful!!!! I made it out of there without any candy..on purpose..so I was happy.. trying to be a better eater these days...and lose a couple of my winter pounds!!! So yes...today's Easter dinner was a brunch and didn't have my homemade dinner rolls, or biscuits or my french toast souffle..or any real cooking...I have done that all plenty of times and next year it will be back to our house with the dinner that will fill my home with tantalizing aromas..today I really didn't miss them...I was too busy eating good food!!!
