Are parents suppose to be open minded?

Are you an open minded parent? or Are your parents open minded? My parents are open minded so I don't really know what would it be like if my parents were conservative. I think most of the children hoping that their parents are open minded. I'm actually happy about it too. But my brother told me that the position that you stand right now is much depend on how you are brought up by your parents. He said most of his friends are successful in their careers because their parents have been telling them on what to do and what is important since small, and he said he is still nothing until today because he never knew what is important for him and what is the right path. He said that he is not blamming my parents but if you want your children to be more successful in future, you need to be stricter. My parents give us 100% freedom and let us do anything that we like even when we were teenage. They never forced us to study nor to work. Maybe I'm not really a successful person in career but I got a happy life. What is your opinion?
