What Do You Do When You Can't Sleep?

Ever had a night of constant tossing and turning and very little rest? I have those quite frequently and I ask myself why. Most nights it's because I am worrying about something and I cannot quiet my thoughts. I try to relax and just go with the flow as one sleepless night will not be too detrimental. However, what if it goes on night after night? How do you handle this type of problem? What works and what doesn't? I know these questions have been asked before, but the useful information bears repeating. Thanks!

I used to do that all the time so now I usually drink Hot tea before going to bed (Sleepy time tea) it helps me relax and I would sleep like a baby.

I always can't sleep during weekend nights. It's because I'm used to be awake at night due to my work (I work in a contact center, night shift). So when weekend nights come, I find it hard to sleep. I what I do is watch DVD movies while drinking coffee. Sometimes I try to relax by reading books. Well, they say drinking milk helps you fall asleep. I have started this discussion, but with very little affirmation that milk does help you fall asleep. I haven't tried it, but it might help.

oh i have the same problem! its so hard to get a good nites sleep! i lay awake many nites and worry about stupid things, and the longer i'm awake-the stupider they get. i try and clear my mind, but the nite goes on forever when your not sleeping. i've tried sleeping pills, and relaxing baths, and soaking in a hot tub, nothing seeems to work. i guess if my life were easier and worry free, it would help! good luck

It's so true that when you are having a bad night, it seems like it goes on foreever, but then morning comes and you wish it were nighttime again. Thanks for sharing.

I had also experience this one, what i did at first i forced my eyes to close and empty things that barely disturbed my sleep... but then i cant really avoid so i decided to stay up..take a sit on a sofa. and think of something. Something that would make you comfortable, sometimes i talk to myself, and sometimes writing my thoughts on a paper until i got so sleepy... sometimes, the things that we imagined (maybe, problems, house hold chores, & etc..) all thru out day might the reason why you cant sleep.

I also think that problems seem much worse in the middle of the night than they do during the day and that makes the anxiety a lot worse. Thanks for sharing.

One thing I do is I write down everything I can think of that I can do the next day to fix what is bothering me! For instance, if I'm worried about my taxes, I try and get all of the documents together, and then write a note to myself to remind me to call up a tax consultant the next. Even get the number ready so all I have to remember is to call the number. Put the list somewhere you won't forget, like by your car keys or your cell phone (I use my cell as my alarm) This seems to work for me.

I think your suggestions are a good way to relieve us of ou worries. This may work very well when we are not able to sleep because of the work we have to do next day.

If I do get up during the night, I usually head right for my computer. It's actually a good time to work because the house is quiet and I also use Tylenol PM too.

You really have to free your mind of all thoughts. Do something that would keep your mind away from all day thoughts or problems. As for me, I usually relax my body berore I sleep.. that is, I take a bath, put lotion and stuff like that, and when I've done all these things, I turn off the lights and go to bed. If still this does not work for me, I lay flat in bed and let the coolness of the air enter my body.

i try to read a very boring book, listen to mellow music, and turn off the lights. when sleeping has always been an issue and you find it hard to fall asleep almost every night, then you better consult a doctor. that way, they can prescribe you some sleeping pills. be wary coz sometimes, sleeping pills have side effects. just consult a doctor first before taking it.

When my brain refuses to go to sleep, I get up and do something that busies my hands and lets my mind gnaw on whatever it's worried about. Usually that's crochet. Doesn't matter if I have a project going or not, I can just pick up a ball of yarn and a hook and crochet what amounts to a scarf in a really simple, repetitive stitch. I usually rip it out afterward and rewind the ball, but I feel a lot better once my mind has had a chance to ponder whatever it is that's keeping me awake. I just find it's better not to fight it. If the problem is persistent, and there is a definite subject you are worried about rather than several random things, try writing it out. I prefer actually writing by hand when I do this - something about the contact and flow of pen on paper is soothing. It doesn't have to have structure, be spelled right, or even make sense, because it's just for you. A mental purging. Once the worry is on paper, I can usually let it go. It might work for you, too.

I totally agree about not fighting it. I have experienced a great deal of anxiety over not sleeping and in turn, I can't fall asleep. I just try to go with the flow at night and eventually I get back to sleep at some point. Thanks for sharing.

i feel your pain man. what i would usually do is before i am going to sleep, i have myself a glass of water to drink. i then lay myself to bed, and think of nice things. hehehe.. then, close your eyes. eventually you will fall asleep. i read that in an article that water calms down your brain of some sort. i guess, it worked for me. hehehe

I usually read, hopefully something boring or otherwise I will be so rivetted I will never get any rest. Sometimes I know it is just going to be a lost cause and at that point I will just get up and get on with things. Normally the following night I will be tired enough to then sleep normally.

I usually watch television, work, read books. These are the few that can help me drift to sleep again because my brain is the most active at night. Luckily, i am my own boss at home so i don't need to wake up so early to join jams to go to work.
