do you think sleep deprivation can contribute to depression,
im sure insomnia could drive the sanest of people crazy, but is there a direct link?
does sleep or lack of it, and depression go hand in hand?

Lack of sleep is a symptom of depression as well, and I beleive it worsens the problem. Which is probably one of the reasons some gain weight while depressed. Sleep and depression go hand in hand as well as lack of sleep to weight gain.
But there are some who sleep more while depressed. I think some of it is all about how your body responds to the depression

Yes i completely agree, but it is a well known fact as you say, that if you have a bad sleeping cycle that you're eating habits do go a bit crazy.
You're body does some serious repair while you sleep,
and gets you ready for the next day.
However if you arent revitalised and this can seriously affect how you feel the next day!
It is all a viscous circle i think, and once you fall off the wagon, its difficult to get it all back to a nice routine again, a downward spiral im sure is very difficult to get out of!
On a better note, i do ease my sleeping problems with melatonin, they might not work for everyone but they are 100% natural and even classed as a dietary supplement!

Yes, absolutely sleep deprivation can contribute to depression. You become very tired and worn down, therefore emotionally you will be feeling that way too. Sometimes if you sleep too much you also feel extremely tired and not feeling like you are worth much. I have had that happen on both ends of the spectrum.
