What do you do with myLot Private Messages?

This may sound like a strange question but earlier today I went to my 'messsages' area to find a message a friend had sent be a week or so ago. I was surprised yet not surprised to see that I have over 200 messages - they are all read and responded to but I never deleted any. I just keep saving and saving... Ok, truth is I am a saver - I save everything and you know it is true the second you throw something out you will want it or find a use for it. So, what do you do? Do you save your private messages for ever? for a period of time? delete them as soon as you've responded? What is the reason behind what you do with your messages?

I don't delete them too. If I delete them, I won't have a record of the conversation anymore. I really hope myLot will make the messages section more user-friendly zzz... If myLot introduces a new rule that we can only keep xx number of messages, I will probably wipe them all then. Till then. :P

I'm surprised they don't have something like 'all messages will be deleted automatically after 30 days' or something like that - with the number of myLot users there are I can only imagine the amount of space all those private messages are taking up. I know I've sent some that were pages and pages long :(

I leave for a short time if it is a friend that I correspond with. I do that to remind me what we have been talking about so I know to follow up with them on whatever it was. I guess you could say I save them to help me be a better friend. If it is just a message from someone asking a question or leaving a nice remark, I reply sincerely and then delete them right away. I do that because otherwise things seem to pile up for me. I tend to get overwhelmed when things pile up for me.

That sounds like a pretty good system, once I get my 'mess' cleaned up maybe I'll try to do the same.

I leave them for a short time and then delete them. There is no reason to save them unless they have info in them that you may need.

LOL - maybe I should have you take charge of my message box, for some reason I think they all have something important if nothing more than that person thought enough of me to message me :)

I like to keep messages just to make sure I answer any questions. I would hate to get a couple of messages mixed up. I file everything at home too, to refer back to.

Hey I think I just figured out a solution - I get notified via e-mail when a friend messages me so once I've responded to the message I can just delete the one on here and then save the one in my e-mail (just in case)...

junk - Oh no mail all over the place
That is really funny I save all of mine too, I wasn't even aware there was a delete option until I seen this discussion and then I had to go and look..funny thing there, but it is a good thing a link that I was looking for from when I first started was still there along with a friends email so all in all saving them has proved to be a good thing.

LOL - well I'm glad this discussion helped someone :) Now when a friend sends me an e-mail address right away I add them to my regular address book and for a nickname I add their user name here so I can connect the right person with the right email address. I really have had no reason to save any of mine that I've seen so far.

I keep them for a while and eventually trash them. If there is info that I think that I may want latter I copy and paste it into a notepad file that I keep for that. Then I have created a shortcut on the desktop to it.

Now notepad is a great idea too - I have a folder on my pc where I've copied discussions that I wanted to save, tips, recipes, and touching messages mostly. I could do that with messages also.

I am not the kind of erpson to throw things away, this includes messages. I really enjoy when I hear a message from someone. It is nice to know that someone thinks of me enough to send me a message.

One of the fun things about going through all my messages was seeing the changes at myLot. Had messages from friends thanking me for adding them to my friends list (now we're like best friends in the world), one we were in a little competition who was going to make it to 500 first, another we got our 99/100 rating the same day. Little silly things but memories.

It's not really a problem for me since I don't have that much messages as you, and I make sure that they extend as "discussions" by responding to the same message again and again when talking with someone, you can see the whole history of a conversation in one message that looks like a normal mylot discussions but it only goes between two people.. I would still delete some messages if the members have been deleted from my list or if it wasn't important message..

Oh wow that is a lot of messages there how can you deal with that many messages on your private messages, yes I know what you mean but I always respond to mine and then delete them so that I get them out of my private message section I do not like to leave it with so many message there. I have already answered them so there are only a couple that I do leave there for future reference.

I had been wondering what to do with my private messages, so to play it safe, I kept them. It had occured to me that there may be some info in them that I may need to refer to at some later stage. But it is going to be a nuisance keeping too many, & at some point I imagine that I will delete them.

I've gotten some great ideas from other members on how to save but not have my messages be out of control. Mine are all cleaned out now so starting with a fresh slate.

I haven't figured out how or why I get so many, except that I do tend to 'talk' alot. I deleted 10 or more that were friends I've never talked to but they message me with questions - like I'm an expert on myLot. I do have some friends that it's almost weekly we message each other but most of those we e-mail now.

I hate for my inbox to get cluttered so I automatically delete those messages which I don't consider important after reading it. For those that I consider really important though, I try to keep them for as long as possible. I try to limit my messages to just 100 because I hate overcrowding my myLot inbox with messages. Fortunately for me, I don't get that much messages in myLot so I haven't deleted any of my messages yet. LOL!

I'm new and don't have any PMs. Usually I save them, unless my inbox gets full or I know that they're useless.

I dont even usually read them because its always someone with some new site that really pays and they all turn out to be a big waste of time with the exeption of maybe 3 or 4.

I save a couple of my messages if they are important or have something in them that i know one day i will need or want to look back at. I'm like you, i save and save, but there comes a point that you just go holly crap, look what i've saved, this is crazy. I found myself saving little pin boxes and things like that, empty coffee cans, bags from the grocery store (I had my whole pantry filled with them at one time) and so much more, i realized that what was once a good idea, got out of hand. So i started throwing things out, little by little, because i kept thinking of reasons i may need them, but now, i only have a few boxes of crap I'll probly never need but the possibility is there, and that's the way it is in my home. Now on my computer, every blog i write, every conversation i have, their all saved, because their important to me, i may need them, i may not, but even if i don't, it's nice to look back at those fun times and see how great things are. I have about 40 some messages here in MyLot that i haven't deleted, but it's because they mean something to me, or are just important for future reference, So in a lot of ways, I'm a saver, and a lot of these things will be saved forever.

You know faith, your topic is timely with what I was planning a few days ago. When I was still a newbie here, I had sent out a few private messages to those who requested to be on my list of friends. I simply thank them for choosing to be my friends. Guess what??? nobody replied back. Since then, I stop sending one. I stop trying to be too friendly with anyone. I always replied back when I received private messages. Its a way for them to know that I received and acknowledged their messages. I never deleted any single one of my messages yet. But I will delete the earliest one some about 3 months ago and no replies. I will not delete the one coming from few chosen friends. I like to keep a record of all our conversations and I guess, you can call me a sentimentalist, but I considered it a treasure to me. :)

That's me, sentimentalist :) I did find some messages like that - someone I offered help to and never even got a 'thank you for your time' and others that it was kinda funny because there was no response but those people are no longer on my friends' list either (spammers, cheaters, etc).

I know what you mean. Fortunately of me, I didn't receive a lot of spammers. You know, for the last few days, I was thinking of doing my second round of deleting friends again. There's no sense in keeping them really. "sigh"

I think you should remove the old messages. Lets say the messages that are about general subjects/talkings and that are older than 3 months. I am not sure if this is true, but I always feel that as if I should had a lot of private messages here I could take too much server space from Mylot. It must be saved somewhere on it. It isnt saved on your pc its still here on the server. So to keep the server running as smoothly as possible and give everyone a change to make a good way of earning some money here without having times and times to waite for a discussion/answer to be posted here, I would delete the old messages. Just out of my social behavior.

I think I am too new to answer this one. I already have a few Private messages. But, I cannot figure out how to delete them. Do the Private Messages get deleted off automatically after a period of time. How do you save these messages. Sorry that I am not able to contribute to your discussion and am asking you my own questions......

there's a little trash can beside the subject once you open the message, you can delete it, or it's automatically saved. Either way, it's up to you, you can also do this with the notices that MyLot gives, the trash can is usually on the right hand side of the page about half way down.

Thank you..... I would be extra careful the next time. Coz I just went into the "Messages" module and did not find the "Trash" icon. Maybe, Mylot shows it only when you get that message for the first time...... as you said...... I think coz I did not trash it at that moment....... it got saved. I would be careful the next time on......... Thanks again.
