Would you ever live underground?

Would you ever live in an underground home? I have seen some people have created underground homes as a security measure for nuclear attack or other catosphre..Would you live in an underground home if given the opportunity? Why or why not? I, myself, don't think I would like living underground. I think I would get claustrophobic. I can't even stand driving under the dark tunnels you sometimes come across when driving to certain states along certain highways;)+

I wanted to have a house that was different from the rest, but building one underground never did occur to me! I have been a great fan of the comic book character The Phantom, who lives in a cave-house. He later gets a modern house constructed in the jungle, but with a twist. The entire house is on the top of a tree, with a special counter-weight based elevator to take people on top of the tree! That was a house I really wanted to own! I have also wanted to have a camper that I could take anywhere out in the wild. I guess I love living out in the wild, away from the maddening crowds and pollution.

Well, the phantom had many places, didn't he? He never wanted to be seen because of his face so he hid behind his stuff...Hiding though, is not the answer..He was a good man but didnt think people would accept him . Hopefully your house would not keep you away from the needs of others;)+

Oh my goodness, I'm going to sound like such a weirdo, but I think I wouldn't mind it! I have had a lot of basement apartments, and prefer the basement when I lived at my parents. Why? Because its quieter, and you don't have to worry about the lights bothering you when you sleep. That, and I hate tornado weather, so I like to be in the basement when I sleep anyways just in case! I wouldn't want to do it though if I couldn't EVER come up though, that would get old always being stuck down there forever. I don't like driving in tunnels though. Always afraid I'll get stuck if there is a problem or something!

I don't think you are weird.. I know there are folks who don't mind being underground. If you don't have claustrophobia you wouldn't mind an underground home. Have you heard of them?:)+

My sister and I have talked about having an underground house. We think in the future you will need one just to survive. We have decieded to buy some ground and start to build our house for the future underground.

I don't know if I could stand underground living..but if it looked like a regular house and had some way to get some sunlight..maybe I would consider it.. Are you taking into account some way to allow the sun to shine in?+

If living underground would save my life then yes, I would do it. Of course when the threat of a nuclear attack becomes very real, we all do whatever we can to protect ourselves, no matter if we're claustrophobic or scared of the dark, or whatever. If it was a choice though, I wouldn't do it, I'm scared of the dark, although not claustrophobic and I need to be where there is light - natural daylight that is. It would scare me too too much being underground in the dark lol.

I think the homes that are made underground are well lit..it just not like your home above the ground. If you open the curtains you could see dirt perhaps you could have it colored;)+

I would find this very difficult i think I'm severely claustrophobic and I have seen those homes on TV and there are so beautiful. but no natural light would be difficult on me.But i mean in a natural disaster or attack what choice would we have. see after the MRI machine my fear of tunnels and things has only intesified..but i bet there nice and cool lol.. I know what you mean.. I just think of "what ifs" like what if there was an earthquake: we'd be buried alive. What if there was a flood we would drown..I fear being out of control:)+

If there is no reason for to go underground then i would rather live on the surface. Like you said before, the claustrophobia and the darkness. I'm used to seeing wide open spaces and the blue sky above with the sun shining above my head, that i will go crazy if i'm asked to live in a bunker. Besides, what about the air? Theres not enough space for proper air circulation right? To think that if the madness did'nt get to me first, the possibility breathing foul air is enough to kill me. But i understand that in times of war, there is no choice but to go underground. Otherwise you might end up as collateral damage if there is a bombing. To reiterate my statement, if i have the choice, its no.

It's hard to go from one extreme to another. So, switching from being free to being confined probably could drive someone mad;)+

I'd love it to be honest. So long as it was done right and was an actual house not just a whole in the ground type thing. If I wanted to go outside it's just going up and out. No big deal. If I don't I can stay inside and not have to worry about the sun hitting me in the eye or the heat that comes with it. Of course living in Florida there are very few things were it's underground. They just don't build homes here even with basements, which I miss. It would also be nice because it would be better insulated and I wouldn't hear my neighbors all the time. So many places now the houses are built so close and you can hear your neighbor sneeze so having an underground home would be nice.

Not hearing neighborly noise is one plus of the underground homes..I suppose..but what about pets..How would people handle those that need to go out;)+

I don't think I'd want to live underground, even though I have seen some very interesting homes made out of abandoned military bunkers and missile launch stations. I think I'd miss being able to see daylight and sunshine. That said, I like so-called "earth homes" that are built into a hillside for energy saving reasons-- I guess because they typically have one side of the home facing outward, so even though they are sheltered by the earth on three sides, there IS one side facing outward.

I don't think that "earth homes" would be so bad..just not into the whole underground home idea yet..I don't know about never see daylight unless one emerges from underground;)_+

sure,it wouldn't bother me at all. not only is it a protection from some weather,it's much easier to keep warm, from what i hear. i would make sure i had a fire tunnel and an elevated entrance/exit tho-snowed in would have a whole new meaning if you didn't stock up on supplies.

It would be nice if they did create undeground homes that they would have some kind of outside wires or rods that when turned on would defrost ice..say like when it snows:)+

Having an underground house for safety purposes is good. But actually living in an underground home? I don't think so. I mean, it would only kill you because it has no windows and fresh air to breathe. You'll just be suffocated. For security reasons, why not.. but on a daily basis.. never! ;)

I agree: having no windows would be more then I could handle..Not being able to see blue sky without climbing out of a hole.;)+

I'm not claustrophobic so I guess I wouldn't mind living underground. It's a bit unusual but It's not really impossible. But I'll still prefer living above ground, thank you very much.

Yes, I think I would love something like that! I am allergic to the sun, wind, daylight, humidity and pollen, as well as a lot of other enviermental things, and I love the darkness, coolness, the cold and NO SUN!

Wow, I never met anyone that was allergic to all those things. I did see a movie on tv called "the others" where two children are completely allergic to sunlight so their house was always darkened all curtains closed. etc..Have you seen this movie?:)+

This remind me of the movie by Brandon Frasier entitled "Blast from the past". You can see that they have live underground because of a nuclear attack. Well as for me I don't like living underground but if really needed for security then maybe yes. It not really healthy cause the source of sunlight is very limited which is also necessary to our health and yeah I may develop that clustorphobic.

Do you think that people who don't live underground but are always in the house are just as exposed to medical conditions ..since they never get out into the fresh air and sunlight?:)+

No one wants to live in unusual places, like underground or under the water and so on, until they are bound to, by the circumstances you mentioned. Most of you might have seen a movie called 'Twister', where they have shown that each house had a underground room, in the yard, for the family to take shelter during deadly thunderstorms. Recently, I was seeing a programme in Reality TV, where they were showing how a Woman was trapped in her swimming pool, when a fire and strong winds raged a mountain in Californis. She was fully immeged in water, except her nose, for a full day, till the winds blew over burning her house to ashes.
