Alcohol - A Truth Serum?

Have you ever heard anyone say that alcohol makes you tell the truth? I believe it. Because from my experience, when you are drinking, and you've drank enough, I'll spill my guts to anyone about anything! My parents got divorced after a night of drinking. The way my mother told it, they both got drunk and told each other the truth and decided that they didn't want to be together anymore. So if in fact alcohol does make you tell the truth, does it also reveal the true personality of people. For instance, I call myself a happy/loving drunk. Because when I get drunk, I hug people! Everybody in fact. Not in a bad way, but in a "I Love You Man" way. Just like others get violent. Others get depressed. My mother is one of those depressed drunks. So do you believe that alcohol is a sort of truth serum? Or do you think it just makes people do stupid things? I believe it's both.

It can be, but it all depends.
I had a report recently from a family member who saw me extremely bombed out of my mind - and she told me everything that I said, and it was complete bull.
Apparently I told her that I really hate one of our friends, which is stupid because I don't hate her at all. I'm quite fond of her!
Maybe you get to a point where what you say is true - and then if you get even more drunk, you just start speaking absolute gibberish.

Yes i have heard some people saying that they speak truth and things that they can not speak when they are in normal state. They forget the fear and consequences of the speech. They just want to express their views

Like you I tend to be a happy drunk and definitely agree with the truth serum bit. What makes it even better though is that it's also a memory eraser and you simply can't remember having told everyone the truth.

Eh, Most of the time. There's things I do remember...it may take a couple days to hit me, but I'll eventually remember them, but then again, there are lots of things I never remember. I guess it just depends on the situation and how much you had to drink.

I think it depends on what you're drinking and what your mood is at the time you start drinking how it affects you. I'm always a happy drunk, and it makes me very tired, it makes my brother want to debate and argue about stuff..like politics and religion..but I think in most people it lowers your inhibitions and makes it easier for you to do or say things you have wanted to do or say but were afraid to. I have told people things when I'm drunk I never would have told them sober. LOL

I'm not sure that I would call it a truth serum, but I bet it has alot to do with being more relaxed. I say crazy off the wall stuff when I have been drinking and apparently I'm the life of the party...even if I don't remember saying or doing it the next day.

I believe it makes people do stupid things, but when it comes to telling the truth I'm not so sure. I know that sometimes people will come out with just complete rubbish, or things that they don't mean. I think it depends on the person really. You could end up saying that you hated someone, but that may not be the case at all.

LOL Yup! I've learned how to think very carefully when drinking, so that while everyone else is sitting around saying things they wish they hadn't, I just sit there, and remember it all. hahahahahahaha I'm the spy at parties. i know how to control myself when drinking, and I remember things said by people who can't! haha

I would say it does both as well- Alcolhol makes you not think clearly and not see consequenses of your actions, and therefor you might do things you normally wouldnt do.
I am also one of those that gets extra loving when i drink =)

I do think that it does both. I have said some things I didn't mean to when I was drunk. However I have some things that I would never blurt out when drunk. I know when to keep my mouth shut on some things.

Well alcohal can also make somebody tell lies too! But yes in a way somebody who is drunk won't think and tell themsevles that oh no i shouldn't tell them that! So in a way the only reason it is a truth serum is that it makes people stupid!

oh is it but it more of a weak serum which makes u weak and make u tell things u want to hide as according to me u dont have to be drunk to spell out truth.

In my own experience, i don't beleive when people say when they are drunk they don't really know what they are doing or saying, for me it's completely false. i've been so drunk once and i admit i've done stupid things like shouting and crying or even kissed with my crush but he is not my boyfriend. But I completely know what's happening, I just done things because i want to do it and my friends cannot blame me because i have an excuse"im drunk" and i just keep on pretending that i dont know what happened but truth is i know very well what happens.

It is very much a truth serum, though perhaps you can't handle the truth! LoL!
