are pets things we own or members of the family

Another discussion I started inspired this question. One person said that she never let herself get close to pets, they were not people so when they died it was no big deal.
Others shared stories of how losing a pet was very difficult.
What do you think - and why?

I always hated it when people would say they own a pet. I think we are lucky if a cat accepts us as their family. In my house the cats run the place. They are my kids and I can't bare the thought of losing them. When my mom passed away my dad was left with two cats and a big empty house. These cats were there for him in some pretty dark moments and were definitely treated as part of the family by all of us.

Your story reminds me of the time when my mom passed, over 20 years ago. At that time, my dad wound up being alone with his dog named Princess to keep him company. If Princess had not been around, my dad would never have recovered from severe depression. Now, with his passing in July 2006, I only had my cat, Tabitha, as company. I also believe that she saw him at times.

Both of these stories are very sweet. Whywiki, I consider pets to be a part of family too, and many times they do choose us.

Pets are definitely a part of our family. We mourn them in about the same way we'd mourn a close friend.
