At what age did you give your child fizzy drinks? My daughter loves coke a lot and she is only 3.Whenever we have pizza she knows there is going to be coke too.I don't give her much and whatever amount,I dilute with a lot of water and shake out all the fizz before giving to her.Would it be harmful still,do you think?Do you approve of giving fizzy drinks(not only coke, other fruit flavoured fizzy drinks too) to young children as young as 2 yrs old?I believe drinking fizzy carbonated drinks can damage the eosophagal lining.Am I wrong? What do you think?

Dont have kids yet, wouldnt give a young child soda. I think if I allowed it would be past 5 or more. I got started on soda at 2 yrs old. My dad gave me a sip of dr pepper my NOW favorite soda. So not too young. Just cause my dad set a bad example doesnt mean I would follow it. I cant stop drinking it maybe because of the young age thing?? :/

It is good that you donot want to set the same example your dad set.your kids will surely have healthier habits because you are so much aware.

I only allow my children to taste fizzy drinks at the age of 5. Thank goodness for that... Till now they do not like the taste of fizzy drinks and would opt for juice instead. I have read somewhere that consuming fizzy drinks for children is bad as it can also damge their teeth as well as their stomache. i think you should let your daughter drink juice or just plain water instead of carbonated drinks.

The problems won't be noticeable now.I think later on the kids will have problems. Some responses here have really shaken me out of complacency so I am now going to make my daughter give up coke.

My eldest daughter never liked frizzy drinks until she reached 4 when she saw that everybody in the family enjoys drinking coke or pepsi. Now whenever we buy soda drinks we usually hide from our kids so as not to tempt them to drink. Sometimes, when we eat outside we can't help but still give them those kinds of drinks because those meals came with coke or pepsi as a complement drink. I was even alarmed when I received an email about soda drinks specifically coke and how damaging it is to our health.

We are having to do that too now-hide our coke from her or have it when she is asleep. But I have never liked fozzy drinks much anyway so I am fine without it.Now I am going to get my daughter to give up too.The information is scary what harm it can do to one's body.

I always believe that coke is not good for your health. I once surfed at the internet, and saw people show the experiment using coke and peppermint. The coke suddenly explode when peppermint is put inside it. That indicate that coke is not suitable for your health. Although you give a lot of water, but still there is some ingredients left in coke. Maybe when she is older enough, and her body able to adapt to it, she can drink coke.

I did not know about that experiment.I guess too much of manufactured products are not good for us!

I never allowed my daughter to drink fizzy drinks or any kind of sweet drinks for that matter. Apart from the fact that they contain way too much sugar so they're not good for your general health anyway they are also the worst culprit for rotting children's teeth. Incidentally fruit juice is also bad for that even when it's pure. The best drink for small children (boring though it is) is water.

I donot keep coke at home either. Before she was born,my husband used to drink a lot of coke. But since she was born,we have reduced it alot.whereas before we used to have cans of coke in the fridge all the time,Now I don't keep even one can.But sometimes you know when we order pizza, the coke comes with it.Then I cannot stop her because she is a very very stubborn kind and her tantrums will shake heaven and earth LOL.

I never allowed my daughter to drink fizzy or carbonated drinks. I just let drink water, natural fruit juices, milk, yogurt, and probotic drinks with lactobacilli. I believe sodas are unhealthy for both the young and the old. These drinks are sugar laden and colas have caffeine that can be addicting especially to a young child. Once it becomes a habit, it's hard to stop. They also rob our bodies of essential calcium that can later contribute to osteoporosis. I don't also encourage juice powder mixes because they contain sodium and preservatives. I used to be a regular soda drinker, but I stopped a few years ago when I decided to lose weight, I gave it up along with rice and candies as they only give me empty calories. I just drink water and the occasional iced tea and fruit juice.
It's a good thing you are diluting the soda that you're giving your daughter. But I strongly recommend that you let her drink more water, natural juices and yogurt instead of soda. She will be healthier that way.

Thanks for the information, steney.I did not know that coke can rob the body of calcium. All the more reason for me to stop giving her coke entirely!I have never bought juice mix powders either. But I get juices that are made from concentrate. My daughter is attracted by the packaging of those-they come with straws attached to their side.I try very hard to give her natural fruit juices but she does not seem to like it..I am going to give her more of yogurt, water and natural juices now.

We dont have fizzy drinks in our house. I drink Sprite the very odd time and will sometimes give my son a little mouthful out it but thats it. I give him water or ribena to drink or fruit juice. And he has his milk every day too.

I don't know if fizzy drinks can be harmful to little ones. It seems that it is a novelty to them to be able to drink pop. My daughter had her first sip of pop when she was 4. She was at someone elses birthday party and they didn't have juice. She likes it, but I don't let her have it often just for the fact it isn't healthy. She is 6 now and usually will grab a bottle of water over any other drink. They have the flavored water that is fizzy now too. That might be a healthier alternative to giving your 3 yr old coke.

I think that carbonated water ,whetehr cke or any other fruit flavoured,is not too good for kids. You are lucky, your kid likes water,Mine will be happy to drink coke all day if I don't keep a watch on her!LOL

my kids never had fizzy drinks till they were about 5...then they only had them when we went to McDonalds...my step-daughter lived on them...she was always cranky and tired and complaining about leg cramps and headaches...when we got custody i cut out the sodas..started making her drink milk (which she hadnt drank since her bottle and she was 8)gave 100% juices..she was a D student in school now she gets A's and B's...she has no more headaches no leg cramps and has grown alot...now we let her have sodas when we go out to eat but only once a weekend...i dont think giving your daughter alittle fizzy drink will harm her just teach her it is a special treat just for pizza night and let her enjoy it...

you are right,I should just restrict her instead of saying a strict no-no because that will make her demand it even more.I agree, caffeine in coke can cause headaches.I used to get headaches too when I drank tea and coffee. Now I have stopped tea and coffee and feel much better. Thanks for your response.

It is a good decision for you to not give him caffeine drinks until a little older. But after reading the responses here,I think I would keep the child away from it as long as I can.I am going to try harder now to get my daughter to give up coke the few times she has.

I think you should discourage your 3 years old daughter to dring coke. As it tastes good, the child attracts on coke etc. It may harmful for your baby. Better you give her milk, juice etc These are natural things and will add not harm. Readymade things are really harmful for children, keep them away from it. Try to give natural things much and much. Initially you will find difficult to mange the child but after sometime you can do. And she will also accept it, will not insist. Changes cannot be done forcefully, remember. Try to understand her very patiently.

Diluting with water will help, but shaking out the fizz won't change much I don't think.
To me, it's not the fizz that's the problem, it's the amount of sugar in the drink. Giving a child fizzy drinks, or even too much sugary non-carbonated fruit juice, is terribly bad for the teeth.
I admit I don't know much about the eosophoagal lining, but if you believe that it can be damaged by giving children fizzy drinks, what made you give your daughter fizzy drinks in the first place?
My daughter is only 18 months. She drinks only water or milk. She has tried natural no-added-sugar fruit juice only twice in her life, and she has tried fizzy orangina once only just because she was thirsty and I had forgotten her water so the only thing I could give her was what I was drinking myself (which was orangina).
I can't say I believe in giving young children sugary drinks, no. They will drink quite enough of it when they are older out of choice without encouraging it whilst they are young.
My little one loves water anyway.
