Do you sleep, talk or meditate during a haircut?

Alright, let's face it. We are no longer living in the era of cavemen and cavewomen so sooner or later, we are going to need a haircut. If you are "lucky" to have an enthusiastic partner, he or she might probably snip off those strands for you. Otherwise for the rest of us, we will likely head off to some barbers or hairdressers.
As you sit in that chair, having handed over all control of your head and hair to the hairdresser, what do you do in the meantime?
I have to confess that I really hate it when the one cutting my hair keeps trying to have a conversation with me. If you happen to visit the same barber again and again, I assure you that it can get very irritating when you get asked the same template questions every single visit.
In the past, I tried to sleep too - but it turned out to be quite a bad idea. It was really embarrassing when I got woken up when the barber was trying his very best to keep my head still lol. :P
Yet if you don't sleep and just open your eyes wide and observe the barber in the mirror, it doesn't seem right either. How do you expect the barber to work properly if you keep staring at him? So nowadays, I try to meditate - with my eyes closed of course. By closing my eyes, I am signaling that "I don't want to talk to you". By meditating, I try to just float around a little yet not fall asleep.
What about you? What do you do in the barber chair? Do you sleep? Talk? Meditate? Stare ahead? Or what? Do share your thoughts. ;-)

I virtually never have my hair cut for me.. But! If I am at the dentist, or somewhere else, I will meditate.. which to me is quiet reflection.. or the practicing of quieting your mind so you can 'hear' higher things.. This can also lessen pain, and can bring the answer to a problem.. and can even make a long wait seem shorter..

I have got military haircut. Military haircut means hair which nobody will be able to hold. Very short and small hair. I love to get hair cut like this as I'm in finance business and need to go for recovery many a times and don't want anybody to catch my hair during a fight. I generally goin morning for a haircut and so there is no chance of sleeping during a hair cut. I love to watch movies as I get shaved also the day I'm for haircut. I ask my barber to put any new movies vcd. Many a times I hire a vcd and goto his place if have idea that he must not be having a new one. He is a nice fellow as we have to book seat one day before ( on sunday's barber shop is housefull and he cuts hair of people first who have bookings), he arranges for vcd. I think I have told enough about my barber and his shop lolz.

I will read one of the lovely magazines they provide in the waiting room. Most will get the idea that you do not wish to be disturbed. Also it gives me a chance to catch up on the juicy celeb gossip which we all secretly love to do once and awhile. And if they dont get the hint roll the magazine up and hit him/her a few times.

Well my momma is a hair stylist. Or a beauticain so lol I don't have this problem really. She does tell me what I need to use to get my hair to look right like the kinds of shampoos and conditioners that I need if my hair gets dries out on the ends of it. So really it is a big help for me.

Wow, certainly not one of those question i have ever considered to be asked or answered. OK so here it goes. All that I do remember is that when I was a young lad, my pop and I would go to the barber together, he would get his done first but it was never a cut,... more like a trim.. he had a beard and all. I never understood why he always got a trim. While he was getting his trim. I would sit in chairs that were oversized for me to sit in to begin with. At time I would try to be like everyone else and keep my feet on the ground like everyone else. While sitting down, but that never would worked,. of course being only 4 or 5 years at the time of my first real barber cut in my life. Then it was my turn and there were times I was completely ecstatic, or really excited to even get my haircut, what the barber would do is get this makeshift cushioned board and place that baby on top of the arms of the chair,.. cause I was only standing at three and half feet at the time that I remember to be my first time in a barbershop. Seeing everybody sitting around having a great ol' time, chatting about the football(soccer) game. What the heck did I know... I was getting my haircut! So the barber would call me over, "...OK jazz.. (my nick) it's your turn, already to go". Oh boy, was I ever! Sat up in the oversized chair for a child, .. got all comfortable and everything,.. moment later I fell asleep,.. can you believe all the hype I had given myself... put me to sleep! Now a days, that never happen considering I now stand over 6" and no fro what so ever,.. plus I cut my own hair,.. not my specialty to do.. have no skill except to cut/ shave my own hair. So I guess, to answer your discussion. I don't fall asleep, meditate, talk to myself.. (that would be bad). Although, I do however tend to gazed from side to side, up and down using mirrors to make sure I gotten every strand of hair off my head. Thanks for your discussion, it was rememberable!!

hehehe! Interesting discussion. Well, I have good fortune, my friend, as far as finding barbers are concerned. Those that I find are either those who barely speak my tongue or the reserved types, so it really doesn't matter. As long as I can convey how I want my hair to be cut, things are going to be just fine. However, more annoying than the barber can ever get is the nature of inane topics that the other people waiting for the barber's precious time come up with. Mostly, the topics revolve around the politics of the state or the state of politics, mostly the first followed by the second!!!! The other hot topic is Bollywood meaning which lady actor is going around with which male actor and which director is trying to seduce which actor. This would be followed by the poor state of public roads (Take my word for it, they are really bad, but they never seem to change for the better, so why keep talking about it?!) Occasionally, an enthusiastic and optimistic person chips into the conversation saying that the roads in his locality have actually seen some asphalting, giving others false hopes in the process!!! Sigh!!! Barber-shop conversations!! They must be the same world over!

Usually I just stare ahead and answer the hairdressers questions which are always stuff like "been anywhere nice on holiday?" "what you doing tonight then?" etc. Very tedious but most of them do it and I suppose you have to answer. I prefer when they don't talk much.

I hate going to the hair dresser. All those bright lights, mirrors, the shininess of it all. Ack! I just like to get it over with as quickly as possible, and I hate the way the feel they need to talk to you. I discourage it in every way possible. If they don't take the hint, I get them off on the tangent of my prematurely gray hair, and that can sometimes keep them occupied until the ordeal is over.

Usually I talk about something to the barber itself. But if there is not much to talk or if Imreally tired and all,I just go to sleep as soon as he start cutting it down.He cuts it so smoothly that you feel really asleep.

Usually, I just sort of sit quietly. I will talk to the hairdresser sometimes, but I prefer to just sit quietly. I may have to try the meditating thing. :)

In this age and time where women have played an increasing active participation in society have chosen comfort over aesthetics, i always have the straight hair. I am naturally straight but i have been putting my hair in a bun lately just so it will naturally create a wave after too. I like wavy or slightly curly hair lately.

I absolutely agree with you. I hate it when hairdressers try to chat constantly too. Even worse, it's usually about very boring topics. I try to stop it by giving very brief replies, that, hopefully, don't lend a response.
If given the chance, I much prefer to meditate whilst at the hair dresser. I love it.
Some hair dresses are getting the hint nowadays it seems.
I think they used to be "trained" to have discussions with clients, because some just can't stop talking.

I have so little hair left that I barely have time for my a$$ to warm the seat before I am done. I usually just have them get the clippers out and shave me right down. It looks like every army movie you've ever seen where the new recruits get their heads shaved.

I do not know why but everytime I get my hairdone people often converate about their problems. I conversate also I think going to the hairdresser is therapy for some people. I do hate when hairdressers ask alot of person questions that have nothing to do hair when you are not in the mood to talk.

I often talk with others, such as my friends, haircuter. Sometimes I don't talk with others and close my eyes to think about other things if I feel tired or I am in bad mood.
Frankly, I don't like to talk with haircutters. I'm afraid that it will affect my haircut. And I don't know how to talk with them. Sometimes we are in the same ages, they often ask about my private information, such as name, address, mobile number and so on. I feel very uncomfortable about those questions. I often speak nothing if they ask me such questions.
