When is recess?

My little girls, who are 7 and 10, don't have recess at their school. They get 20 minutes to eat lunch in the gym, which gets transformed into a cafeteria for the hour, and sometimes if they finish eating early they can shoot baskets for a few minutes, but they do not get to go outside. In fact, in Chicago where I live, 80 percent of schools do not get recess! WHAT HAPPENED TO RECESS, EVERYONE? Are schools forgetting that they are in the business of helping to raise not tiny adults, but CHILDREN?

Recess is one of the many things that is getting phased out of schools along with gym, art & music. They have to spend so much time on things like standardized testing and discipline problems, and things that parents used to handle teaching at home. Recess is very important in that it gives kids a chance to practice teamwork, be outside and just plain excercise for a few minutes. Yet another reason I'd like to homeschool DS when he's older.

I agree with you. I too would like to homeschool my kids eventually or at least have a better choice of schools!

My cdugher is in kindergarten and has a recess. school starts at 8:30 recess for 15 min at about 10:30, lunch/kindergaten dismissal at 11:30. I never heard of schools not having recess. I think that the kids need a break and some fresh air. This gives them a chance to get the sillies out! lol

That is good that they get a short recess even in kindergarten! When my nephew as in kindergarten, they didn't get recess at all but had 15 minutes at the end of the day to play with toys or do art in the classroom. There's a whole nother issue... kindergarten... the kids work so hard even in KINDERGARTEN now and there's no time left to play! Little kids learn by playing!

It is just crazy that the schools are removing recess. Children need some time for a break from being in a classroom all day. Why is it that they gripe and moan about the food that schools are serving because of all the obese children but they are taking their time out of the day for exercise? It seems that they would be supporting exercise and nutritional foods together rather than supporting one and removing the other. It just doesn't make any sense to me.

I agree with that, too! They tell kids to lead an active lifestyle and get around and move, but then they have them spend the entire school day sitting quietly on their bottoms!

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what's recess. I'm thinking it's a break where students eat and talk or play sports. In my country, students usually have 20 to 30 minutes recess, and I think that's enough. I may have misunderstood you, but that 20 minute break your kids have, isn't that a recess? Or it's something else? What is recess, anyway? Because if it is what I'm thinking, then 20 minutes is more than enough.

Recess is the time kids get to play outside or in really bad weather in the gym. When I was growing up we got a 30 minute break for this and then at lunch time we got 55 minutes to eat and then go play. This is at the elementary school level. Now though they don't get that.

Recess is play time. They do have twenty minutes to eat lunch, but traditionally (at least in the USA) kids would have extra time in the middle of the day to play on the playground or in the field. As an adult, if I had a job where the only break I got was twenty minutes to gobble down my lunch before I had to get back to work, I'd quit! So thats why I am shocked that they expect kids to deal with that!

My kids don't even know what recess is (except for the tv show)! The school systems are so demanding these days that they seemed to fizzle out recess. It is too bad because the kids could all use a little time to reenergize and run around a bit. At our elementary schools they do take the kids outside to play at the end of the day. I think that they should take them out mid day instead. It is my belief that the teachers use the outside time at the end of the day as a break for themselves.

I know what you mean! Its silly to take them out at the end of the day instead of at midday, since they are going to be going home in a minute anyways! A recess break in the middle of the day would make the day more manageable for the kids, instead of knowing they have to get through an entire school day before they can play!

recess is a waste of time that could be spent on other forms of education or possibly electives chosen by the children themselves rather than generic required courses.

I have to respectfully disagree with you on that... although I do like the idea of even elementary school kids getting some time to study things they choose, instead of the things they MUST study for the curriculum!

It is the same here as well. The majority of days they don't get recess, they do get 2 15 minutes breaks during the day. Here our school days are pretty short and the kids are not in school enough (the teacher complain they can't teach everything that is required - just what is on the LEAP test). not only does recess need to be brought back, but they need to extend the school day and extend the number of days the kids are in school.

Schools over here starts from 7 in the morning and end at 1 in the noon, so the recess is kept somewhere in the middle at about 10:30 am.

Here in Western New York where we are there is no recess either and they dont even get a few minutes after lunch even if they finish their food early...There is actually an organization called Rescue Recess that you should check out I missed last yrs event thing but I'm planning on looking into it for this upcoming Sept...I think the kids NOT getting that morning and aftrnoon break is a HUGE part of the problem when it comes to issues the kids have in school...Hell when you work a job as an adult you get a morning and afternoon break so why they would eliminate it from the SCHOOLS is beyond me!! http://www.rescuingrecess.com/

Recess at our school ends at grade 7. When I read this my first thought was where are they supposed to learn social interaction and when do they get a break? At that younger age they need breaks so what are they doing for those breaks? If I was a teacher I would go nuts. I would be talking to the school board and see what can be done about this. I know as someone else stated there are stats on those that get breaks learn better. I hope you can get something done about this. I find it so sad.

Recess ended in 7th grade for me, too! I still think age 12 is pretty young to be cutting out recess... especially because I remember how WILD kids were in junior high! Sometimes our classrooms seemed to be bursting at the seems! We had gym class, but that is a nightmare for more athletically inept kids like me!

My son is in the fifth grade ,just turned twelve and to save money the town requires him to get on the bus with the High School kids.Which is at 7:00am . Then they have lunch at 10:45 for roughly one hour ,But this is also their only recess .So I've got to wonder if the kids are'nt rushing through lunch just to go and play with their friends . Who"s to say if they're eating at all . AngelNicki I'm with you .These kids need a RECESS!!

i cant believe your kids dont have recess! recess is so important because kids need breaks from schoolwork to exercise and re-energize before learning again. recess can teach kids that it is ok to stay active. if schools are taking recess away, that is telling the kids that it is not important to have exercise daily. what is the point of taking it away? its not like you can learn a lot more by having more school hours devoted to learning instead of playing. plus, kids can learn things playing outside, about how the world works instead of just reading about it.

This is bad.I am an engineering student and even I get a 1 hr recess! Scientific reasearch has shown that in order to have the full development of a child there needs to be some time off for the child....apart from his/her daily studies. Giving the children only 20 minutes break that too not in a proper manner is not at all advisable. The poor children cannot even interact amongst themselves. Something must be done to get their recess time back.

My daughter is in highschool and homeschooled but my friends grandson is in elementary school and they don't get recess everyday but a couple of days a week if the weather is good on those days. I think it is a shame and contributes to a lot of disciplinary problems when kids don't get that blowoff time. A time to run and refocus.

Our schools have recess, but I was disturbed to find out that at lunch, they cannot speak. They have to sit there and eat and say nothing. We were always allowed to talk softly with our friends. They need recess to let some of the energy out. Why do they have play equipment if they won't let them out to play?

I know when my neice was in elementary school, which was only a few years ago she got 15 minutes for recess. Her lunch was 20 minutes for eating only. That was with a full day of 8:30am till 3:30pm. I think this is one reason we are having problems with children being over weight. They aren't getting the time to play like they need.

recess must always be impose on every school it makes children be active and less feel sleepy due to change of scenerario in the classroom plus the fact that if theyre hungry they can eat..food is important in our system..

hi, i do not know about chicago, but here in hawaii, the kids at my daughters school get no recess. they get 30 min lunch, one hour p.e., physical education.but no little recesses. some jethro bodine, doubble nought spy, super brain figured that out. if you cut out those recesses, multiply that time saved by all the schools, then multiply by all the teachers, you would have a few million dollars less in payroll, then you could line a few pockets with it,lol.

Educational institution often times forget that what they are teaching are young ones. They tend to feed them with knowledge to the the point that the child gets pressured and oftentimes get lazy to go to school because there is information overload in their brain. School staff or people forgets that kids need a break like recess to feed their stomach and easily absorb what they learn.I agree with you, they are not adult. They have forgotten that children should learn and enjoy themselves in school and hould also have break even for a few minutes. In this way going to school is exciting and full of fun, not just information overload on their part.
