On December 11, 1986 I was blessed to become a mother for the first time. That is when my daughter Amanda was born. The doctors could tell something wasn't right because I wasn't growing like I should during my pregnancy but I think they kept it from me because they didn't want to cause undue stress. When Amanda was born I noticed her skin color was blue but I didn't know anything was wrong. They took her on to the nursery and I expected them to bring her to me later when they checked her out. Later the pediatrician we had chosen came to my room. He sat there talking to me and my husband trying to explain to us that Amanda had a serious problem. Her pulmonary artery and her aorta were completely reversed. It is a condition called transposition of the greater vessels. I had never heard of anything like this. He told us that they were going to have to transport her to Huntsville, Alabama to give her better care. I was in the hospital in Florence, Alabama. They wouldn't let me go since I had just given birth but my husband was going to Huntsville to be with her. They let me go to the nursery to see her before they took her to Huntsville. I can still see her at that point lying in the incubator, so small and blue. I reached my hand inside and she grabbed my pinkie finger and held on tight. I told her I loved her and they rolled me back to my room crying as they prepared her to go. My husband called me some time later from Huntsville. The doctors had done what I felt was a cruel thing. They told my husband we needed to get ready for an autopsy. Thankfully he has an aunt that lives in Huntsville and she was able to come and give him support until his parents could get there. When he called me I called my mother and pastor and told them the situation. Prayers started going up all over my little one. They were finally able to stabilize her enough to travel to Birmingham. When she got there they did a procedure to help her get enough oxygen until she could grow some more and get stronger. My husband and I stayed in Birmingham with her until she was able to go home. When she was four months ago they did open heart surgery to reroute the vessels of her heart. To see my daughter now no one would ever know that she had ever had a problem. She has grown into a healthy young woman that I'm very proud of and love very much. We still take her to Birmingham once a year for a progress visit. She has done fine and the doctor is always pleased. I'm so thankful the Lord gave me the privilege to be a mother and gave me my daughter Amanda!!

Amanda at our favorite Mexican Restaurant - Amanda was waiting outside for the rest of us when one of the waiters wanted to take this picture of her.
Thank you hon. It was hard but I know the Lord had a purpose in it somehow. She has just finished her second year in college and is still trying to figure out exactly what she wants to do. Something good will come out of all of this. I hope you get to feeling better soon with your back problems and find out what is going on. SheliaLee

I am happy for you. It is good that you didn't give up on her. I'm glad you could find someone that could help and did. Doctors can be cruel when they tell you results that they find. I think they have built a wall so that they are not affected by all the bad things they see.

Yes they can, I thought that was awful for them to do my husband that way. I'm so thankful his aunt was able to come be with him until they took her to Birmingham.

I agree. She is 20 years old and knows exactly what happened to her. She knows if God had not been watching over her she wouldn't have made it. I'm thankful that she has been saved.

Wow, what a story! I cannot imagine how scary and stressful that must have been for you. I'm so glad to hear that everything went well and that your daughter has grown up into a wonderful lady. When things like this happen, we can ask for a miracle, and sometimes, just sometimes, we get what we prayed for. Thank you so much for sharing your story. If anyone out there is going through something like this now, I'm sure it will bring them comfort.

Congratualtions. My daughter Caitlyn was born with a heart condition as well Tetralogy of Fallot. One side of her heart was bigger then the other. The childrens hospital prepared me for the worse.Caitlyn had her open heart surgery when she was 5 months old. Her heart wouldn't go into synch. She came home with a pacemaker. This past October Caitlyn got a new pacemaker but is doing wonderfully. I just told you this story because I wanted you to know that I do realize how worried and scared you were. I know what miracle you have recieved. "hugs"

Dear Friend, The Lord is the one who brought me and my family through it because believe me I didn't feel very strong at the time within myself. But I could definitely feel the prayers of my family and church family and also people who had never even met us. The Lord will not place anything on us that we cannot bear. God Bless You!!

Wow what a real blessing. I am happy everything turned out alright in the end. Doctors can be so negative and deceiving at times. Your little one wanted to be here on Earth so much that she beat the odds. You must feel so lucky and blessed to have her. Never forget to let her know you love her. It's the best thing a parent can say to a child.

Reading this, I'm thinking of my partner right now who'd be having her due for our first baby any time this month. I'm always praying for her to have a normal delivery for our precious one. I was touched with your real life experience and I'm happy for you. This is one great feeling a parent could ever have for his/her daughter/son. This is our first baby so I'm really having mixed-feelings right now.
