i am new to playing the guitar. I like to learn some basic strumming patterns that can produce really nice melodies. I think the strumming patterns I am looking for are more then just strumming downwards. I am can tell from listening to some songs on the radio or TV that the strumming is a combination of up and down strokes - but when up, when down, how many up, how many down, I don't know! Can someone guide me on this or point me a website which show me how this is down and how this sounds like (very important!) via a mp3 file or sound file format?
Thanks!

Strumming is whatever you want. It is rhythm guitar playing.
I suggest reading this guide on Ultimate-guitar to get you started.

the best program for learning guitar is....
http://www.guitar-pro.com/en/index.php
They have lessons in all genres & levels, it isn't free but it's a great program with new tabs being released constantly, well worth looking into if you're serious :)
