Are Home Security Systems Useless?

I recently cancelled mine because I feel that it's useless. What do you think?
If someone breaks in, before the Police arrive, I feel they already have had the time to do whatever it is they wanted, so what's the point?

Ours is cause we never activated it and we could never manage to turn it on and all that. But my friend's dh is a cop and he said they are effective.

True, many experienced criminals can get in and out in a few minutes. However, some may be scared off by the alarm (or just a notice that you have an alarm); others may be there to do you harm, so if the alarm keeps going, your neighbors know something is wrong.

I have thought the same about ours. However I think that our alarm may be loud enoug to alert the neighbors which os the only plus. But the respond time in our area is AWFUL and I'm sure everyone knows that (inlcuding would be burglars)
