What is it about soccer that makes it the most popular sport in the world?

I am wondering what is it about soccer that makes it the most popular sport in the world? in my country, basketball is more popular and when i ask why, many say because it is because of the speed of the game, the high points, the variety of plays, etc. in soccer, usually it takes a very long time for a team to score, so some find it boring. The fans though say it is the flow of the game that makes it interesting. Can you share your opinion why soccer is so popular?

i guess the world cup has a lot to do with this. the world cup brings a lot of excitement especially to players and fans alike in all regions in the world. each and every country that competes in the world cup gets 100% support from their respective countries. i guess thats why soccer has evolved into one of the most popular sports in all over the world. it brings passion to everyone

Thanks for the response. if they only could do something about the violence and riots which sometimes accompany big soccer matches.

i really didn't know it was the most popular in the world. being from the united states, i hardly ever hear abuot soccer! i personally don't really care about sports at all, but soccer is not a big deal over here. we just recently got a soccer team at our high school, and that is not the "one" that they all want to go out for!

Thanks for the response. Soccer isnt really that big in the US but for the rest of the world, soccer is a big deal. what i dont understand though is the riots it causes.
