How do you console a friend?

He was conscious but hardly alive the night we learned that the rebels shot him seven times. He took one bullet on his head. The rest was scattered all over his body. He is my husband's best friend and we were all shocked when we heard the news. Fortunately, he is still alive and fighting for dear life in spite of the fact that the bullet is still in his head 3 nights after the horrible incident. He can hear us, see us a bit and understand. How do we comfort a man who is in such pain? How can we say that life is good when he almost died for someone he does not even care for? So depressing...
