I liked the films but I must say the books, the depth of the story is far greater and although admittedly I found them hard to get into initially, once over that I was definitely involved.

i started reading Tolkien at around 10 yrs old. my brother gave me all of them after he read them, includeing The Hobbit.i was a tolkien fan! I loved the books, and was actually frodo baggins fro 4 halloweens in a row!i saw the hobbit when it came out and then the animated Lord of the Rings, and was hooked to the very core of my being! The moveis dont always stay true to the books, like with Aragorn and Arewyn, though I liked it. i loved the books much more. I do like all the movies, and my 4 yr old loves them. we took him with us to each movie when it came out. his favorite part was when Gandalf calls the king of the horses, and it comes galloping up the hill he could be sound asleep, and if i was whatching that movie he would wake up every tiem Gandalf whistled!

Hmmm... I say both are good enough. Ahihihi... The movies gave the exciting and thrilling adventure feeling to the audience, while the book gave depth to the story. I like reading the books because it enhances my imagination more. The story in a book will always be revised when it becomes a movie, but the movie was also good because it was able to realize the setting, the characters and the events in the book- even if some parts were revised. Yet there are parts in the book that they did not actually show, and the book explains things better, I guess... Still, both the movie and the book are great!!^_^

I really prefer the movie. Honestly, I tried reading the book after the first movie came out because I was so excited to see what happens next, needless to say the second movie came out and all but I still haven't finished the book. It's just that it was SO boring with all these heavy words that I really couldn't understand. Basically, it was a GREAT movie. Maybe I'll come to appreciate the book in time.

the fims are much better, i watched the films before i read the books and the films were much more exciting, also when you have had a face put to the characters it makes reading the books a little better, because films can't copy books exactly it is annoying when you have seen it visually and then you read about it with small changes, looking at the screen rather than imagining it.

I much preferred the movies to the books, mainly because of the special effects and it is far more easier to understand the complex storyline through watching the film than reading the books which I couldn't get into. I am not much of a reader anyhow so will always prefer the film to the books.

I read the books before there were movies, so I am perhaps a bit biased. I loved the books so much that I devoted quite a few years to Tolkien studies. When the films came out I was overjoyed at how beautiful it was to see the places I had imagined for years come to life. The people had new faces, but they were still familiar.
I read the books at least once a year. It's a tradition. :)

I'd say the books are way better. No offence, but the books offer depth and are perfect for history buffs like me. XD they're a valuable treasure trove for minute details that are way more interesting. Of course the plot itself is more important, but it is these little details and attention to intricate historical facts that lends substance to the trilogy and projects a very fantastic world of Tolkien inhabited by wonderful beings.
The movies are nice, I agree. It's really breathtaking, and Peter Jackson did a great job of doing the LOTR series justice. What I imagined indeed was portrayed with amazing intricacy and accuracy in the movies.

The first book was a bit difficult to get started on (and probably a bit confusing if you had not read "The Hobbit") but once it gets going the books are much better. The depth and detail in the books is something that could never be captured in the film. They did a great job on the films but the books were much better.

I enjoyed the moveis and they helped to bring the story to people who just are not into reading or like yourself prefer ligher reading material. But I have to say that becuase of the missing bits from the film when compared to the book I will have to come down in favour of the Books.
