I have 4 boys, so the oldest always gets new, and the rest get hand me downs. But I always buy new shoes, underwear and all that, and always buy SOME new clothes for the other three because it only seems fair, just not as much as the older one. Would you use handmedowns?

My son gets handmedowns from his cousin. His cousin is always one size bigger than him so it works out perfectly. I don't get handmedown shoes, his cousin wears those out quickly.

Well, with my first one, we bought all new for him... I'm sure every first time parent does taht, but after a while, I could not justify spending 30-40 dollars on an outfit that he would wear for a couple of weeks, or if he wasn't growing that much a couple of months. I think the final straw was when we bought him a new Easter outfit, on sale for like 30 dollars, and he outgrew it before Easter. We buy alot of thier clothes at a local consignment shop. We still buy new things, just not everythign is brand new. That way, when he needs a special outfit, Easter, Christmas, etc. we can spend the money and not feel like we are wasting it. Of course it helps that he has a little brother that will grow into it eventually. FOr the youngest, we buy him some new clothes here and there as well. OF course we buy underwear, socks, shoes etc. all new.

Definitely. I have 3 boys and the younger 2 grew up wearing hand me downs. They are all too old now. I would always buy them very few new school clothes and one outfit at christmas time. It is very expensive to keep them in new clothing. I do get hand me downs from my sisters. I am smalling in size than the 3 of them so if they buy something and it shrinks, it goes to me. I love it. Something new for me and free!

I do use handmedowns for my boys. I have the smallest girl in my whole family so nobody passes clothing down to her but I do buy her used clothing from thrift stored and yard sales. As long as the clothing don't have any rips or stains in it I see no reason not to reuse them for another child. My children get new socks, underwear, and shoes because I don't like to reuse those kind of items. I also do buy them new pieces to go with the used stuff.

I can't do the hand me down thing with my daughters clothes...Mostly because her little brother wouldn't like them too much! LOL But, I do shop consignment stores in my area. Both of my children get new shoes, new socks, and underwear. And do get a good bit of "new clothes" but I love the consignment stores. Even though I financially can buy everything brand new - I see no point. My kids are 5 & 3 and find a way to stain just about everything. Plus, it teaches my kids a good lesson. And, bonus for me: I save a ton. I wouldn't be able to buy alot of the brand names I find at the consignment store anywhere else. Jeans cost me only $4.00 there. She checks them for stains and rips and alot of her stuff is brand name. I love shopping consignment!!

My cousins do used hanmedowns items to his two kids. His husband is a seaman she is also working as admin supervisor of one of the biggest mall here in our place so I think she is capable of buying clothes for her kids. But she buys items that is really expensive then hand it down with her younger kids. I think that way she could save some money. It is not really bad to become thrifty once in awhile.

I only have a 14 month old little boy. He gets a few things from his cousins, but they are both girls, so the choices are limited. He does get jeans and just plain onesies from them, though. And when he was younger, he got a lot of sleepers from them. Now we buy about half of his clothes new, and about half of them used. We buy a lot at yard sales or on ebay. I don't see the point in buying him all new clothes. He has a lot of clothes this way, and we still have enough money left over for fun things. I have a friend who refuses to get her kids used stuff, but then she always complains that she never has any money to do fun things with them. It just doesn't make any sense to me.

Everyone gets SOME new things. My girls probably more than the boys, not because they are girls but because they have very different bodies, were born 4 1/2 years apart, and were also born in opposite seasons. The younger of the two still gets hand-me-downs just not from her sister. The older one gets things from my mom and I. My oldest son doesn't have anyone older than him to get things from but being a boy also doesn't need as much to stay "fashionable", he also isn't quite old enough to have all the special events my daughter has. I have passed some of his things down to the younger boys but my s/o used to constantly buy new clothes, especially for our oldest when he was still our only one. Now the older two are close in size and share a lot of their shirts and the two year old years the pants that the four year old has out grown. All the clothes that are in decent shape are being saved for the baby. We have passed down a few pairs of special shoes and a few pairs of "for play" shoes. I never even thought about underwear! So far they've all gotten new but we haven't had the option of sharing anyway. My girls are just too differently shaped and I'm still working on getting my second son potty trained. I probably should see is I have any left from my older son though just so I can quit dealing with him ruining all his new pairs. Socks have been shared somewhat mostly just because they end up mixed in together often anyway.

Yes, my youngest son has worn a few of my oldest son's hand-me-downs. Most of the baby clothes my youngest son wore were indeed hand-me-downs as a lot of them were still in good shape, but once my oldest was walking he wore out clothes so fast that it was only once a blue moon that I put aside any of his clothes for 'later'. The older my oldest gets the sooner he wears out his clothes. Good thing I shop at Wal-Mart for my kids clothing or I'd be in trouble! LOL

I have worn hand me downs and my daughter has worn them as well. I do shop at thrift stores and I find lots of name brand clothing. No one knows the difference either!

Yes, yes, and Yes! My son is the oldest and only right now but he gets hand-me-downs from his cousins. I only use the stuff that is in good condition. I also shop a lot of consignment stores. By shopping there he can have a much larger wardrobe with more brand name clothes at a fraction of the cost. He also get new socks, shoes etc and some clothes but I don't feel bad at all for taking advantage of freebies and a good deal.

I always have my youngest wear handmedowns. Being the youngest when I was growing up I always had to do the same thing. I don't think there is anything wrong with that. There are better things to spend money on when you have perfectly good clothers that can be worn. I think what you are doing only makes good sense. :) cheers,

Yes my 14 year old son gets a lot of things from his older brother, not because i make him or anything like that, they just share the same taste in clothes, can't argue with that.

Hand me downs are great because most children out grow their clothes before they wear them out. We bought my oldest daughter a lovely wool coat at a thrift sale, these were designer clothers that a lawyer and his wife bought for their daughter, and both my girls wore the coat. We had it cleaned and my sisters had her 2 daughters wear it. Another cleaning and my wifes younger sister daughter wore it. It is usually the parents who have the problem with hand me downs for the children and not the children.

Most definitely. My children had hand-me-downs, not only from their siblings, but I often shopped in upscale consignment shops! What I felt that I had saved, I put back into a college account for them. To me, preparing for college is much more important than having all brand new items!

Like you, my eldest always get the newest clothes and shoes. I do buy new ones for my youngest one especially clothes for outing. My eldest girl is on the chubby side while the other one is thinner. Children tend to grow up fast and it will be a waste of money to keep buying clothes. Though, I tend to end up buying new clothes for them from time to time. I like to dress them up like a doll, LOL!

We are huge fans of handmedowns!! Most of my kids clothes are used that we get from friends, family or wherever!! Clothes are so expensive and kids grow so fast so it is hard to spend so much money on new clothes all the time! My husband is in the military and on the base were we live they have the Airman's Attic, it is where people donate things they don't want anymore-like Goodwill but just for the military. They have tons of clothes, books, movies, housewear stuff and everything is free!! So I go there all the time and get my kids clothes! And drop off the stuff we don't need! It is really great, and me and my hubby get things there too =) We do buyt them new clothes, just not everything =)

My oldest two daughters are the same size so they get more newer stuff, but my youngest daughter has twice as many clothes I love handme downs and even buy lots of used stuff from ebay. I either sell or give away all the clothing that the kids dont fit anymore to whomever needs it! Same with my clothes and my husbands clothes

when i was younger i always wore handme downs and i didnt like it. it felt unfair that i could only wear stuff that others have already worn instead of having my own clothes. if i have kids i think i will have them wear handme downs because i can save money on clothes that way.
