What do you think about having carpet in the kitchen or bathroom..
I tried to say to my landlord that carpet in the kitchen really is inpractical ..as grease falls and if fire should fall some how it would quickly start the house aflame and then in the Bathroom ..so much water being splashed would eventually make the carpet moldy.
What are you thoughts about carpet in the kitchen or bathroom areas of the house???

we used to live in an apartment where the bathrooms have carpets. It's really comfortable in winter we don't have to wear slippers to the bathroom, but then we have to make sure the carpet is dry everytime we finish using the bathroom or else it might get moldy. now in our house we don't use carpets unless in the bedroom since I'm allergic to it

How do you dry the carpet in the bathroom; since you said you need to make sure that the carpet is dry in the bathroom or else it will get moldy;)+

at the time there is an exhaust in the bathroom. sometimes I forgot to turn it on and the carpet will smell. we have the exhaust here in the house to avoid water damaging the wooden structure.

You are lucky littlemel to have an exhaust in your bathroom.. I think many bathrooms are made this way; but mine, unfortunately never was blessed with that part so I cannot dry the carpet that way..I end up throwing rugs out and hoping I remember they are there so I don't fall and break a bone or my neck;)+

Your ideas on carpet in the kitchen and bathroom is exactly what I think also. I have carpet in all rooms except the kitchen and bathroom and I have a good grade of linoleum in both kitchen and bathroom. So I think that is the way I want to keep mine.

I definitely would never put a carpet in the kitchen. I have never heard of anyone who's done that, it's just so impractical and a bit stupid if I'm honest. The kitchen floor gets so dirty between one thing and another, cleaning it would be a nightmare.
I also wouldn't want one in my bathroom because it would get quite wet, and I'd rather clean a tile floor or any other similar surface.

I agree..The carpet in the bathroom has not served really well I end up putting carpet squares on top of the carpet to try to protect the carpet..like little mountains all over the place:)+

That does seem a little strange. I've never heard of anyone have carpet in either of those rooms. I agree that it's highly impractical and how long can you really expect a rug to last in the kitchen with all the spills. We have little squares of carpet in the bathroom beside the sinks and outside the bath and shower and we have to wash them regularly because they get so beat up.

I tried to explain this to my landlords when I moved in nearly 4 years ago and now the carpet is showing signs ..it's all over the house..I told them I prefer to have no carpet then have it all over the house..it holds everything..and moreover I have cats who think the carpet is to sharpet their claws on;)+

carpets in the bathroom are alright but not the best idea, having it in the kitchen is wrong, because things always get spilt on the floor by accident it would be a waste of money becaus ethe carpet would get so dirty, that is why a hard floor is recommended.

I do not feel carpeting is appropriate in the kitchen or bathroom due to spilling foods and liquids in the kitchen area that would stain and ruin the carpeting. I prefer vinyl or tile or wood flooring in the kitchen and bathroom areas. No carpeting for me in the kitchen or bathroom. He is definitely a strange landlord to have that type of flooring in those rooms.

There is only one word for carpet in the kitchen.....eeewwww. Because it dosnt matter how clean you are, there is always going to be something dropped/spilt on floor and it would be disgusting no matter how many times you clean it. And the bathroom, no,no,no, mould mildew yuck, very unhygenic. It would smell in just a short time.

carpet for bathrooms was big in the 50s and 60s but not very practical (or hygienic!). better to have tiles (vinyl, linoleum, or ceramic) because they are easy to clean and disinfect. use bath mats that you can throw in the washer and dryer when they get to smell funky (and if you have men in the house they WILL smell--sorry guys!--because they really miss the point (HAHAHA!) when they are doing their business! as for the kitchen, other than ceramic tiles, the only other viable alternative (and it is really huge right now) would be either hardwood or laminate floors, because they are easy to maintain and not too hard on the feet (you know how you can get a really bad back ache when you have to be on your feet in the kitchen cooking up a storm!) and if you like it warmer for your feet while doing dishes, have one of those cute floor mats (some of them are shaped like half moons and look like a lemon or orange slice). tell your landlord that it will increase the value of his investment building if he installed ceramic tiles in all the baths and kitchens of the apartments. good luck! ;-0

I definitely do not like carpet in either of those places. One thing about the bathroom is as you say it will get wet and than you have mold. Not only that but when guys use the bathroom their aim is not always true and it lands on the floor. If it is carpeted think about the smell that would come about. Sorry guys but this is true. I have had it happen in my house. I had to tear the carpet out to get rid of the smell. I no longer have carpet in the bathroom. In the kitchen it also is not good. The cooking is done in the kitchen and spills do happen. Grease spilling amongst other things. It would not be easy to clean a carpet in the kitchen.

My parent's have just tiled their kitchen area but their place is 26 or 27 years old, it had carpet in the kitchen - i think that some places just had that from the older days! Apparently, it was the things to do when that house was built!
Grease shouldn't hit the carpet if you have your appliances aren't that close to the edge of the benches - well, my parents never had any problems with it. However, unless there's a spark or something, grease shouldn't be able to ignite on just carpet - at least i've never heard of that happening.
As for the bathroom - well i've never known carpet to be in there - that one does seem weird to me!

Oh no, I wouldn't recommend it too. This is not practicable really. And you have a point about the grease, water, mold and especially the fire. They are too accident prone in that area. My parents prefer tiles in the kitchen and bathroom. They are more easy to clean. They are not that fond of carpets and me too.

having a carpet in either of the two areas is very weird. are the two places suitable for entertaining visitors? because that's basically one purpose of having carpets in a nice place. yes, the two places are nice but not for visitors. hmmm... perhaps, it will still depend on the owner of the house.... :D

Landlords often put cheap indoor/outdoor or commercial grade carpet throughout the home or apartment to protect the flooring beneath (hardwood, etc). It doesn't protect it very much if tenants allow the carpets to become filthy will spills, pet stains, or allow it to soak up much water, creating mold or mildew.
Many older homes also have carpet in the kitchen and bath. I think it was a 1970's thing. I don't like it in either of those spaces. The home I currently own has carpet in both baths, but I plan to do a little do it yourself work and improve on that soon.
Vinyl flooring or tile is much better and much easier to keep clean, so they are better choices for kitchens and baths. It doesn't even have to be expensive flooring, as there as many commercial and institutional options available that are long-lasting and reasonably priced.

We have a carpet at the kitchen but its removable and easy to clean and it's not that big just enough for us to walk on cause sometimes when grease fall on the floor it could be slippery and can cause danger to others, i once have that experience. I think having a carpet in the bathroom is strange cause its full of water there and you are right it could bring so much mold. I only have a rug on my bathroom just to step on whenever I finish shower and I replace it every three days.

I don't like carpet in kitchen and bathroom. However it is not impossible to maintain it but wood or any other flooring is much more convinient. specially when you have to make your bathroom kids friendly then don't just think about carpet.

Definitely,it is impractical. There are so many other flooring options in the kichen and the bathroom, then the carpet. For kichen, wooden and ceramic flooring is the best. For bathroom, one can go for anti skid tiles. But carpets, will be the last and the last option.

For some reason, one of the homes we lived in growing up had carpet in the bathroom. There was a rumor that an insane man lived there before us, so that might be the reason lol. It got really gross and had a musky smell to it. We had to pull it all out and there was mold everywhere, which is not a good thing at all for health. I also rented a place with carpet in the kitchen, I think the landlord did that because it's easy to just lay down a piece of carpet instead of tile or linoleum. I didn't live there long enough to see the long term effects of that.

i'd prefer to have tile, particularily in the kitchen.
rugs in that area get nasty real quick.even beyond the fire danger, who'd want to have to clean that every other day? yuck.

I have never heard anyone putting carpet in the kitchen. However, my grandparents have carpet in the livingroom bathroom. There is no shower or tub, so I do not think that it is a really big problem. I do not think you would want to put it in a bathroom where there is a shower or tub, especially with kids. The carpet would be ruined in months.
