Thoughts on the effect the 15-month term will have on our military personnel

Any thoughts on the pros/cons of the extended term of service? Will 3 months more do more harm to our military personnel than a 12-month furlough can repair? We have personnel that are suffering long-term mental/physical problems after a year. Do you think an extended length of time over there will exacerbate (sp) that?

I can't see how it can do anything but lower morale for those who were expecting to be home in the near future, and now have to spend 3 more months under great stress and at great risk.
It's pretty shoddy treatment of brave soldiers, but I guess it's just another failure on the part of those supposed to be looking out for the men and women risking their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I would totally agree, but am not sure if those already deployed are included. The news was murky about whether it starts with new deploys, or immediately goes into effect. Do you know? If that's the case, it really stinks... for those serving and their family and friends.

one con will be it will lower troop morale even lower than it already is.

I think that's a big consideration, and should've included it originally. I think the originators of the plan are banking on "anticipation" of the year-long furlough to offset any morale problem brought on by additional time served, but I'm not sure that's gonna happen in reality...
