Smoking in public spaces (restaurant, shopping) : yes / no / it depends ?

I just hate the smell, hate everything about it. I can't stand people smoking next to me. I hate when I ask someone who is smoking to stop and she says she has the right to smoke... don't I also have the right to be quiet and to have clean air around me? I just lose my appetite to eat. I just hate when some smokers decide not to respect other people's rights. I enjoy going to a shopping, but sometimes there are lots of smoke... at bars it's even worse, when I go I arrive home my hair and my clothes stinks. And those mothers and fathers that smoke next to their children or even people that see that they are close to children and still smoke... for me it's disgusting. What do you think?

If smoking offends you so much avoid it. They have made some places smoke free here in the USA. What I don't understand is, if I want to open a bar for smokers I can't. If the government makes it illegal to smoke in public it is discriminating to those who smoke. I don't care if people smoke or not. That is their choice. And I think a business should be able to cater to a smoking crowd. I know someone who owns a store where it is illegal to smoke in public and they smoke in the store. The owner has no concern for the law. If it were my business I would do the same. I wouldn't let the government dictate what I can and can not do in my store. If people know they smoke in that store and don't like it... they can drive to the next store. No one forced them to go into a smoke filled environment. They entered it by choice so they have no right to complain.

I think that with the growing number of issues presented by second hand smoke makes it a big no no. Sure, let those who smoke destroy their own health, but personally, I would rather not have mine ruined because I sat in a restaurant full of smokers. Most of my immediate family smokes and I can't stand it. Even if you visit them while you're sick, they smoke all over you and it's just rude. I get so tired of hearing smokers talk about their rights because they don't really care about the rights of the nonsmokers around them.

stop smoking - Stop smoking in Public
I am a non smoker so i cannot stand the smell of the smoke when somebody smokes. And i think smoking in public is very uncool and i don't know whats the regulation in your country but in our country its against the law to smoke in public places. Like in buses, markets and other crowded areas smoking is not allowed but in bars its not banned i guess as once i went there and it was a horrible experience as men there were smoking pods..etc. Anyway we should try to stop smoking in public and make it a better place for others to stand and also a cleaner environment.

people should respect others that dont smoke, but I never hate them. Someone might think your perfume is just as revolting as them smoking, or your deoderant an so on.

Well I have smoked before when I went to college but stopped. My boyfriend smokes. And usually it does not bother me. In NY state smoking is banned from places like shopping malls, stores, restaurants and even most bars...unless they have the proper ventilation set up. I think there is nothing more repulsive that trying to eat dinner and being surrounded by smoke. and as for shopping....i'm glad it's not allowed. Who wants to go buy new clothes that are already smoke-infused! Those that smoke right next to their child...or any child are just wrong. Kids do not need that. And people should have enough common sense to not smoke with children so close by.

I am not a smoker but feel that the government should not restrict smokering as long as it is legal to smoke. Long before the government started banning smoking in places the airlines offered smoking and non smoking seating. Planes were smoke free because most people were requesting non smoking seating, even smokers wanted a smoke free flight. Even restrauants were offering smoking and non smoking sections before the government required it. We should leave this to the market place because you have the right to eat and shop in a smoke free environment, but don't smokers have the same rightto eat where they can smoke? I find some perfums to be ery offencive, lets pass a law banning the wearing of perfum in public. Redicilous isn't it!

For me there is a thin line between being freed and abusing freedom. I think most people abuse its public places by doing what they want and don't consider who are the people around them. I have encounter people like this in public places even in private areas but as much as possible I try to be the one to avoid the bad scenario of confronting them.. I usually just go to other place and enjoy my own air.

Compliments Martinha, I totally agree with you. Everybody must have the right to do what he/she wants, but always respecting the others. So I really believe that there are people who can't resist, who can absolutely need to smoke, so they deserve to smoke when they need it, but we deserve to breath. I'm Italian and only a pair of months ago a ne law forbade people smoking in the restaurants, in the offices, in the cafés.... I'm very happy because people who smoke not only dirty the air we breath, but are rude too and never care about our right to breath clean air.

As a former smoker, I am against any smoking at all in public places. The less we encourage people to smoke the more likely they may want to quit. It's a health hazard to everyone, especially those who have to be around smokers all the time. I worked in an office where there was not supposed to be any smoking, but the office manager smoked and the company owner allowed her to do it to keep her happy. Needless to say, we all had to suffer. Not only was it against the law, but he allowed her to do it, breaking the law. So I say if there are laws against it, please enforce them as well.

Being a smoker I strongly recommend and feel that smoking must not be allowed in public places. If you are smoking, this doesn''t mean that the whole world likes to smoke.

I am completely in your favour. Smoking is bad for the person who smokes it. And he also makes life bad for the ones he sits with while smoking. There should be a law against smoking. So, that we can live peacefully and can atleast have pure air to breathe. Smoking has been in existance for so long now. Its root should be removed for once and for all.

NO!that's truely unfair for those who are not smoking.based on studies the inhalers are the most in danger than the smokers.

Smoking in public places - restaurant, bars, Bus and railway stations, cinemas and malls - is a cruelty .... Smoking in public place is not a right or liberty. it is just violating the right or liberty of others...... The Govt.should ban it....In India Some states it is banned by the court.....But in most of the places it is not implemented by the authorities......Lack of committed people are not there in the Govt........The health of the subjects is Govt's responsibilty.....So the govt.should educate the people......should punish the people who are smoking in public places

Well smoking is fine for me, just as long as the smokers are responsible enough not to smoke when non-smokers are around. I'm a smoker myself, and I hate the fact that I discomfort non-smokers around me...but I love smoking. I just smoke in designated smoking areas...well sometimes in open areas where non-smokers are far enough not to inhale my smoke. However, I think it should go both ways. Non-smokers must be responsible to. If the area is a designated smoking area, they shouldn't complain their arses of because of the smoke...it's a smoking area designated for smokers...what do you expect??!??In short, non-smokers and smokers must respect each others rights. just my 2 cents.
