My dog needs help! He is growing dreadlocks!

I have a mixed breed dog who is nearly five. His hair doesn't ever seem to stop growing, and he doesn't really shed. When he gets wet, his fur gets frizzy, and is a little wavy all the time. The problem is, he gets mats and develops dreadlocks. I cut the mats out as best as I can, but the fur is so dense combing the knots is out of the question. Is there such a thing as a fur detangler for dogs? He is afraid of clippers, and using scissors on him takes an eternity and he really doesn't like it. Does anyone know a natural or commercial remedy to help detangle my poor pooch?

I read somewhere once that you can take one part conditioner to two part water, put in a spray bottle and shake it really good. Then once it is mixed well, spray and it becomes a detangler. But I would say to give the dog a bath first. :) They always seem to love that warm water and it helps to clean the coat before spraying and brushing. The wet fur helps to distribute the conditioner too. Good luck!!! Never seen a dog with dreadlocks before. :)

I will have to give that a whirl. He is only just getting to the point where he likes being brushed a little tiny bit. The mats are too thick for a brush to manage, but maybe if they are sprayed with detangler they will soften for cutting, as well. He is due a bath, so I will try it. I wonder what sort of breed he is to have this happen. As I sid, he doesn't really shed, it just keps on growing and I have to clip him, but he won't stand for it, so I sue scissors and it takes an eternity and doesn't really do a good job.

I haven't had this problem with any of my dogs although I have cut a couple of knots out of my golden retriever's fur on a few occasions. The ladies hairdressers usually have some sort of detangling liquid which they use, so you could try this on your dog if the problem persists.

I never had a dog with fur anything like this poor dogs, so it is new to me as well. The older he gets, the thicker his fur seems to grow in. I wonder if the sell something like No More Tears here?

Why don't you pretend he is a normal human? Just use those big combs ladies use to comb his hair. I might have seen some special combs for dogs while shopping too... check out your nearest pet supplies shop.
