I am quickly becoming aware that the freedom of expression available to all people in this country, Australia, is obviously sadly lacking in immigrants homelands. This is, after all, the main reason many of them fear for their lives and wish to come here in the first place. I saw on the news tonight that a recent study conducted on the "comfort levels" of muslims in this country is at an all time low. and ANZAC day celebrations make all those surveyed fearful for their safety after the cronulla riots. A 30 question, questionaire proposed for new immigrants to this country was said to be too racist and therfore was never made law. Yet to gain residency, citizenship, or even a work or holiday visa to troubled muslim homeland countries, requires a signed commitment to take on their particular laws, values and beliefs. Oh yeah, and if you cant speak the language, forget about it. Are we too soft as a nation? Do other countries laugh at us? Why do we seem to allow more lattitude to minorities and their feelings? And every time people ask questions like these, they are branded racists? yet there are certain parts of this world where westerners are not allowed to enter at all. Why isn't the reverse true? Australia's national community has been refered to as a "melting pot", this is false. For instead of melting together, elements stay seperated and concentated, there are whole post codes where english can not even be spoken? Would this be tolerated else where?
