Debt Consolidation is it good or bad?

I have heard it is a really bad idea to use a debt consolidation company. What do you think?

I am to the point now that I am considering debt consolidation. My mother did it, and says it helped her out greatly. I haven't heard many bad things about it, and hope it will work for me.. I am curious to know what sort of bad things you have heard about it?
