This is one recipe I WON'T be using but wanted to share with you anyway.

Disgusting critter just needs a new image ... and gravy I was looking for a recipe earlier today and ran across something that I will definately NOT be trying, even though I found it quite amusing and wanted to share it with you. I have always been amused with peoples reactions to eatting and or cooking wild game. Since I've been married to an avid hunter and fisherman for 23 years now, I've actually acquired a taste for SOME of the things he has brought home over the years. This caught my attention, since we have also traveled to Louisiana quite frequently, we have been a bit more open to broadening our culinary tastebuds. For the most part, we've really been enjoying the experience, but I still don't think I'll try THIS! Disgusting critter just needs a new image ... and gravy http://archive.southcoasttoday.com/daily/11-97/11-19-97/c07ad135.htm After you read the information found by visiting this link, please let me know if you would or would not try this. And of course, leave a comment if they touched on any of your favorites, lol. :D

ROFLOL, yes funny but gross, huh? Believe it or not, yes they do. Hubby used to trap beaver when he was young and said it tasted good the way his mom fixed it. Hubby is also fond of telling me he would catch the beavers that built a dam at our fishing spot so they wouldn't keep eating the fish we're trying to catch, lol. As we'd watch them swim in and out of their underwater den, his imagination runs wild and he starts regaling me with stories of the beaver fur coats & hats I could make since I can sew, and how good a big pot of beaver stew would be since he's liked almost all of my stew, etc. All the while, my daughter's favorite phrase is running thru my head, "AS IF!"

My dad used to fix raccoon every once in a while. Actually it was pretty good. You soak the carcasses in salt water to get rid of the 'gamey' taste. Then he'd season it and boil it until it was done, pull it off the bone, shred it and put it in the crock pot. It was good! VERY similar to BBQ shredded beef. Seriously.

This is disgusting. I used to live on a lake here in my state and they would have these creatures would come out of the water and get on the shoreline, they are so ugly and disgusting. No, I would never eat such a thing, I would rather go hungry.

Yuk!!!! raccoon - possum - Beaver - Rats - No can do! That sounds terrible - well - not bad if you used something other than rat. I would have to be starving and have not eaten until I could not survive anymore.

Thanks, anyways. I love food but I wouldn't try something like this. There are actually a lot more like that here in our country where people tried almost all kinds of insects and animals to be their food because of the poverty here. But some would still rather be hungry than eat those creatures which I think are not really intended to be eaten by man.

I must say I agree with you there domesticengineer! I felt the same way when my sister said she ate a grasshopper while traveling for her work. She's usually the one with a week stomach, but when she said that the legs didn't stick in her throat on the way down, I almost gagged, eewww. ~:o

After reading this, now I know why my mom said New Orleans smelled when we went there in 97, lol. It wasn't the trash or anything, it was those nasty water creatures. I'm sorry but the only time in my life that I ate a wild creature was when my parents played a cruel joke on me. My mom gave me a piece of meat and told me it was beef. After I ate it, dad was like how did it taste, honestly it was not that good. It tasted as if my mom added to much salt, well they started laughing saying you just ate deer. After that I wouldn't eat any meat unless I saw it come out of the store container. I couldn't eat, cook, look at a water creature. Next thing we will hear is people in the larger cities eating sewer rats, heck some people probably do. This has really helped stop my hunger pains. Which is a really good thing, since it's almost 9 and I already ate. That might actually bring back up what I ate, lol. According to that it talked about catfish and crab. I don't eat those either, I know that they eat fish droppings and its gross. Have fun cooking, while your husband enjoys hunting, and fishing.

LOL, maybe I should make a copy of this for a new kind of diet cookbook. I could say its loaded with foods guaranteed to spoil your appetite without putting on any extra pounds. Of course, we may have to add a caution tag. May bring on bad dreams, NOT recommended for curbing the late night munchies. roflol ps. Did you know some stores actually sell deer meat, lol?

I only got away with that until hubby saw venison at the grocery store, right next to the sausage, lol! So far, I've tried deer, frog, alligator, squirrel, octupus and a few I don't even want to remember, but I know one thing for sure, They Don't All Taste Like Chicken!

Yummy LOL It wouldn't be my first choice certainly, but I don't know... possibly I would try it just to see ..although perhaps I would prefer not to know what it was until after I was finished. I tried so many strange foods in my life, that I suppose I would be open to this one too as long as I knew it was safe to eat. After mad cow, problems with pork, mercury with fish and the bird flu... maybe that could be an alternative LOL

I have visited the link and found out what they suggest.Earlier, that is some 15 years back, I have read in some Soviet magazine that the food for humans in the 21st century would be some wild rodents and the shrimp cryll ( I am not sure of the spelling)found in the Arctic. That seems true. The link you suggested propose to cook a wild rodent nutria for food. Any way people in our part of the world, that is Kerala in India, are very reluctant in eating nonconventional food. I can't even suggest such a thing to my wife. Any way thank you for the information.

Hello abroji. I'm sure your wife appreciates it very much too, lol. :D It is very much the same in the US, most people are reluctant to try something they are not familiar with. I have lived in several areas in the US and it's interesting to explore what is considered "nonconventional" foods for the different areas. Each area has it's regional favorites and in many cases the traditional dishes for the area are determined by what foods are readily available. Having lived in several coastal areas, I like most seafood quite a bit, and it was always available in our area. :)

This is a musk rat right? I have never heard of using a river rat's fur. They look just like the rats in New York. The musk rat looks like a beaver with a rat like tail. I wouldn't eat it unless I had to do it to survive. I wouldn't eat opossum or groundhog either. =x

I like venison and turkey, but duck tasted a little like liver to me and hubby hasn't gotten a pheasant in a long time. Beefalo may be a cross strain but I have seen real buffalos recently. Actually, every time we go thru Buffalo, TX, lol, think they're protected though. What does bear taste like? And what kind did you have? Hubby says he'd like to get one every time we watch Jeramiah Johnson. I'd be scared of the claws. ~:O The American Indians were pretty smart to watch them, don't you think? LOL, we have referenced squirrels as tree rats, but I never really put rabbits in that category. I don't think I could eat one after raising them though. :)

I don't eat hot dogs either. I call crabs sea bugs and lobsters fall into the same category. I throw all of my fish back. I don't like the taste. I do not find the taste of rabbit appealing either.

I like venison, turkey, duck and pheasant. I really like Beefalo but that isn't something you will encounter in the wild. Believe it or not, bear tastes great. LOL They have very healthy diets where they are not exposed to man. The American Indians used to spy on the bear to learn what to eat. I have tried a lot of wild game and have never been fond of rodents such as squirrel or rabbit.

I don't think I would care very much for eating a rat or whatever polite name you would want to call it. Where I live in New Zealand we eat huhu grubs. They are like a slug and live in a tree stump. Pine stumps are the best because the flavour goes right them. Yummmm. My wife will bite the head off then you just eat them up. Taste just like peanut butter.
• United States
19 Apr 07
LOL, I had to look that one up! I could only imagine slimy peanut butter at first, and must admit the image wasn't really pleasant. Now that I've seen it, I know it's not slimy, but more like meal worms here in the US. Meal worms also turn into beetles. Out of curiosity, does she serve them as a meal (in a bowl) alive & wiggling or more as a snack?

LOL, I have tried squirrel, which is considered a tree rat in some parts but haven't tried emu. I have a hard time remembering if it's emu or ostridge that tastes a little like liver. I've heard Emu oil is supposed to be useful too. :)

I know we all make fun of it.....but my guess is....if you tried it and didn't know what it was....you most likely would like it.I've seen that all to many times with food that my grandma used to fix....including kidneys and horse meat. The funny part is....when people turn a little green when you tell them what they just ate. I have eaten frog legs and rattle snake before and those are actually quite tasty.Besides rabbit.....I can't say I have ever eaten any rodents or at least not knowingly. I don't think I would go and hunt those critters or even try to fix it myself....but if given the chance....I might take a little sample. Can't be any worse than eating some of the foods we already have on our dinner plates.

I agree! I can't say that I like organs, though they can be good for you, but I don't like the metalic taste of kidneys and refuse liver due to gagging every time. I have tried cow brain & cow tongue and can only say it was interesting, but not on my list of favs. One thing, for sure, frog legs do not taste like chicken! Hubby said he did like rattle snake though. Because of him, I am a little more experimental, but I still can't force myself to try some things. This happens to be one of them. I think he would be quite amused with the article though. This discussion has definately had me lol! :D

Oh my...I've lost my appetite...Nutria? Perhaps hiding the "ish" factor under a name that sounds nutritious? I smell a rat!!!! I can't say I'm up to any of the mentioned delights...I did see the word turkey..and that seemed more along the lines of my tastes...There's wild game and there's rotten rodent...I'll give most wild game a go..with enough gravy!!!! But I think I'll pass on this creamed critter...blechhh...:)

I must admit ha. I assumed it was a guy speaking ha, he has a point! Critter looks like a very clean to eat animal, compare to other poultry. Not to mention pigs too, when you think sometimes of they eat, I'll rather eat the roots eating critter. But I don't think I'll be trying it soon. Especially that Louisiana is far from the Philippines. But if I had the chance. Maybe a polite bite won't hurt. (^^,LOL) as long as it is cook already and haven't see the critter's face first. Have a nice day! (^^,)

roflol, that could make a big difference to me too! I think I could only take a polite bite if I didn't know what it was ahead of time. Probably shouldn't tell me what it was til the next day either, lol. :)
