Lavender plants?

I decided I wanted to grow some lavender in my garden and went to the garden centre today to get my plant. When I got there I was surprised as how many different types there were. Not knowing what to choose I got my husband to pick one.
Does anyone know what the difference is between the different types of lavender plants?
