I've always been an Intel Fan and I've used thier processors from the 386 to the duo core that I have now. I've heard a lot of good feedback about the AMD so I was wondering which one is better performance and money wise. I'm planning to build another system for my wife, I was thinking of having an AMD X2 processor installed. Any comments or advice on that?

for the best performance, you should buy intel core2duo e-6300 (don't buy e-4300, the FSB only 800 Mhz), why 6300?! this is the lowest series for core2duo, but the performance is very high.
if we compare with X2 it is equal with AMD X2 5300+, but core2duo is expensive today. its about US$178, when u want build a good system with small budget, AMD is the best choice, X2 3600 is about US$70.
1 pcs Intel Core2Duo = 1pcs AMD X2 3600+, T-Force 550 and 512 MB of DDR2 RAM.

id like to buzz in again, id like to add to the last comment. choosing the kind of processor depends on what your requirements are, if you do heavy programing, multi-tasking, and need more power, i suggest u go for intel, but if you only require single tasks at one time, and require higher gaming performance and speed, i suggest you go for AMD.

AMD had gotten ahead for awhile with the Athlon FX-55 (or something like that). Magazines actually said it "beat Intel like a red-headed stepchild." But I am happy to say (I'm an Intel fan too) that, ever since Core2, AMD has been trailing behind. Check it out: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2014685,00.asp
Perhaps you've heard that Intel is preparing to release the first 45nm processors, which use different materials to reduce electrical leakage and consumption while plowing ever forward in performance. Check it out: http://www.intel.com/technology/silicon/45nm_technology.htm
Hope this helps!

i am also intel fan because availability of intel in my area is vast ,amd is less popular.intel is more reliable.

I think the best processor currently is the core 2 duo extreme. But in the single core league AMD is the best with it's athlon 64 processor solutions.

money wise and if the system is for your wife, i suggest you get an athlon processor since it costs less but has very good performance.

I think both is good and only left is the brand itself. That is why when you use AMD, you will said AMD is the best so it be vice versa. For me both brand is good and does have good reputation in processor technology. :)

i am an amd fan i am using amd i my pc and lap!i prefer AMD since i am using one.I use AMD because
-comparatively cheap
-high performance
-high stabilty
-greater support for gaming
i recommned AMD FX 64 bit computing. It has many advantage over intel pentium 4 processors.but i heard that intel pentium duo core2 is much better than other precedures and a like performance with AMD 64.so i f you are going to buy a new computer either you go for AMD FX 64 or Pentium 4 Duo core 2.

it has to be Intel, specifically the newer Core 2 Duo and not the older pentium 4/D

Think Intel is better than AMD and the performance of Intel is far better than AMD.....

I have used both Intel and AMD processors before. In the past, I would say go the AMD route. AMD had the faster processor by incorporating the memory controller right on the processor chip itself, which gave it the lightning speed that it has become renowned for.
However, Intel has recently been in the spotlight with its new Core micro-architecture while no new innovations have been announced by AMD for a long while now. The Core architecture came out of Intel's research labs in Israel (Yes, the Israelis are showing the world how to make better processors). It is much more power efficient, has a better thermal profile and performs alot better than comparable AMD chips of the same range.
If you can wait another year or so, Intel will introduce new chips manufactured using the 45nm process codenamed Penryn and Nehalem for its desktop and laptop lines of chips. With this smaller manufacturing process, Intel can put anywhere from 1 to 8 cores on a single chip! And because of the smaller manufacturing process, the new chips will be cheaper as well because they'll be able to manufacture more chips on a single wafer. But that's not all! Because of the smaller manufacturing process, Intel can now fit a memory controller onto the chip itself, similar to what AMD has been doing. It'll be lightning fast when the new 45nm chips come out.
However, this will all become reality only in 2008. If you can wait until then, you'll get a killer processor at a killer price. But if not, I still recommend the Core Duo currently on sale now as a good buy.
