Can you lose money with Google Adwords?

I have been reading about Google AdWords and AdSense. I am still a bit confused about the difference. There is one thing that I think understand is that you set a budget and you write ads. You set your budget to any amount you want. But one thing that I don't understand is that you may lose your money.
So my question is is it true that you can lose money with Google AdWords? How can that happen?

check out thenetmademerich.com, after yahoo closed my account I found this on the internet and so far I think it's pretty good.

at the moment i have 0.00%conversion rate so i think i am losing money as i now owe 11.60 hope this helps

donna3651, thank you for answering. I'm sorry to hear that you are losing. I don't know exactly how AdWords work so I don't understand the 0.00% conversion rate.
