Ethics and Embryos

Every single time I read something about ethics and embryonic research, there are questions that automatically put my mind on overdrive. First, is it ethical to make more embryos than you plan on giving birth to? I understand the reasons for doing this. It makes sense from a scientific viewpoint but is it ethical to have left over lives to dispose of? Second, if this is considered ethical, what is ethical about the disposal of these embryos verses using them for research to help someone else?
