A friend of mine recently got into this debate, and I wanted to post it here to get your opinions.
My best friend has Cable internet. She constantly complains about the connection going down. She pays quite a bit for her internet, and she is frustrated with the constant down-time of the network.
I have DSL, which is fairly inexpensive. I have never experienced any connection issues. I find the speed to be good and it is extremely reliable in my opinion.
Please share your thoughts. What would you recommend?

I have DSL as well, and have no trouble with it, either. It's inexpensive enough that I upgraded to the 3.0 MBps connection, and I love it!
I used to have cable internet at my last home; it was as your friend is finding - expensive and frequently down. Have her see if the cable company will credit her account for the down time - mine eventually did after I bugged them for a while. I had to keep saying "Let me talk to your boss", but I finally got someone with a brain who realized that I shouldn't be paying full price for a service that was only available half the time.
Actually, better yet, just give her a referral to your DSL company - some of them give you a bonus if you get referrals. :)

I don't think it is really a cable vs DSL question on which is better, but it seems to really be a question of the company & its equipment reliability. I'm on cable myself, & my only problem happened when a windy & icy day broke my cable line, but when reported, they managed to have someone over quicker than I thought. Also, after 6 years, my cable-modem itself konked out, & I was able to exchange it for a new one.
A friend of mine who was on DSL kept going offline at least once per week because his DSL modem kept going up in smoke. After a bank error got his subscription cancelled, he went cable, & has been happier with that.
Another friend had DSL, but when he relocated, he ended up with cable. He preferred DSL, but then agreed that it was the DSL company & the way they did things that made it better than his cable company. One thing that I do know. DSL is a dedicated line to each customer, but cable is not. So if the whole neighborhood was online witht aht same cable company, there would be a very noticeable slow-down in download/surfing speed.

I also heard that DSL has been available to the public longer than cable, but only to a certain few. This limit was because the line distance between a DSL tower/station was limited. At that time, it was reliably unreliable at that time. As a result, DSL was nicknamed Down-So-Long.

A Cable Internet connection ought to have been fast and reliable. But since it is not, why can your friend not take what you have got?A lot depends on the Internet Service Provider (ISP). Many of them would not spend on proper equipment and so the speed suffers. The DSL that you have seems to be good so let your friend also try it. It is not expensive.

As long as it is fast and reliable, it doesn't matter which one you choose.
But DSL is offering best speed, at least here in Portugal. Maybe this vary from country to country.

here in the philippines, we have the DSL, dial up connection and lately the broadband connection, which is a wireless type. Cable internet is not so popular that's why it is not commonly used here. For me the best would be the broadband connection, which connects you 7 times faster that an ordinary connection with the speed of 100Mbps.

I know of a service that not only is six to eight times faster than ADSL, and empowers you with the ability to connect to the internet from anywhere!
The signal is strong and clear through buildings, forest and even up to twenty feet underground!
The pricing is $19.95 per month.
How does your DSL or cable compare?

DSL is obviously a better option for the internet connection. Down time of internet is an ache for internet users. I could understand how the mental condition will be when some important work get suspened due to down time problem.I would rather pay a lil bit high t get the better service than this sort of problem

depends on your point of view on cable and dsl. dsl provides a speed upto a certain amount for example upto 8mb. Generally you get 6mb speeds on this service, depending on how many people are online in your area and how far you are from the exchange. With cable you pay for 8mb you get 8mb speeds no question, it does not matter if theres lots of people in the area online and an exchange isnt applicable in the case of cable internet.
Yes there are people who have problems with both services but thats usually area specific. i have had cable internet tv and phoneline for over 5 yrs and we might have 1 problem a year but it never lasts long. Other than that its a great service where we live.

I guess DSL is better. I have a cablecom broadband connection of 10Mbps speed. It is simply awesome and the best I have ever had.

i use dsl. i have never used cable internet before but have heard the horror stories about the downtime and stuff like that. i also heard that dsl is faster than cable.
i have rarely experienced connection issues either. its just sometimes it is down for a while but goes back up quickly. within hours. yes the speed is good and the connection is reliable.

I use dial-up Internet. I have knowledge of cable net as many of my friends always complained like your friend that cable internet is usually down. The cable operator is most of the time updating his equipment whereas the DSL is started by a well equipped, well maintained Internet Service Provider. In my city, Lahore, Pakistan there is now a Internet Service Provider who has started cable network too and he is getting famous. Overall cable net is just a flop. DSL is best. Now you may be thinking why I am using Dial-up so far, so a simple answer, I am not that in remote area of my city but DSL is still not available here in my area. I"ll jump onto DSL as soon as it comes here.

well it certainly depends upon which area you stay in.and also depends upon whether you are a frequent downloader or a frequent surfer.if you r a frequent surfer certainly DSL is d best.but if u r a frequent downloader then cable net is d best.also the downloading rates of DSL r higher than cable with downloading limits.

I have had both. I can tell you that the cable connection was slow and much more money than what I have now which is Verizon FIOS. This is there newest form of internet connection and I would highly recommend it. It's much cheaper than cable and the connection is way faster. Also, I got it hooked up to my television and through my phone and I save money on all three. It's a great deal and I would highly recommend it.

I use cable internet. Honestly though, from the user-end, you'll probably won't notice anything different from using either one. Don't be fooled by Comcast Tv commercial either, they compare their top-of-the line service to FastAccess DSL lite-which is intended to be the cheapest and slowest of all the DSL.
Either way, it won't really matter which you go for, just compare their prices and download and upload speed and see which one offers the most for your money. I use this local cable internet service called, "Klip Interactive" It's a cheap service for $20.00 a month and offers 512k download speed and 10k upload speed. Its not the fastest thing around, but its all I can afford.
It all comes to down to what you can afford to pay each month.
