I can't tell you how many times I've heard "it's just a fish", "if it dies it's cheap to get another", etc. So many people with aquariums don't know the first thing about what setting up and maintaining it properly means. If you try to tell them they don't even want to learn!
I took the time to explain the nitrogen cycle and some complete (heh, looks like myLot won't let me use that word but I'm sure you get the pic) is actually saying these kinds of things. Don't people realize that these are LIVING CREATURES and not put here to be tortured and killed for their amusement??? Ugh, times like this just remind me why I like animals better than people!
What do you think? Do fish deserve to be treated properly the same as any dog, cat, or other pet?

A pet is a pet, no matter what kind of pet it is. If you can't take care of them, you shouldn't have them. I know I feel really bad when something happens to one of my fish. I didn't buy them just let them die, and neither should anyone else. Good discussion.

I totally agree. It should be so simple, if you can't take care of them just don't get them in the first place! It boggles my mind that so many just can't seem to understand that!

I love my fish. just the same as my dog and four cats ane two birds, i do everything I can to keep them healthy and happy, I have had these fish from the time they were so small, that you could barley see them in the tank, I have six goldfish and one plecostemus( I probably spelled that wrong) but I love them all, they seem to be able to calm me down when I am anxious and I love them for it and do everything I can to keep all of my pet happy and healthy, NO they are not "just" a fish to me, they are like the rest of my pets, they are my babies. I treat my animals as well as I do My child, some people might think I am crazy for this, but God put the animal on this earth for us to enjoy and keep us company, so we have to be good to them.

Yes, they do so much for us! Whenever I'm upset I spend some time with my pets and they always make me feel better. I don't know how anyone could take what they give so freely and not take at least basic, adequate care of them in return.

Hi! Well, I don't about the people who say "it's just a fish," but I have quite a lot of money invested in my fish. I buy fish that are special and important to me. My blood parrots are my favorites. They are so cute (like cartoon fish) and awesome to watch. They cost me over $50 when I bought them last August, they would cost me almost $100 to replace them today. I didn't spend that much money on fish I don't plan on taking care of. I agree, when we buy them and take them home, we are committing to taking care of them. They deserve great care, clean tanks, the right food, and the right conditions to live in like any other pet. :-) Sure, they're not cuddly (although my hubby thinks I'm working on solving that LOL), but I sure get attached to them.

Blood parrots are especially great fish, I agree. There was one at the place I worked at that would play tag with me and chase off any of the others that tried to join in! They always look like they have these adorable little sweet smiles too.

i cant stand ppl like that! even if it is "just a fish" it is still totally depending on me for its survival. there is no "survival of the fittest" involved...EVERYTHING depends on me. and whenever i have a fish die, i cry! i feel horrible...i failed somehow to protect that little guy's life.
ugh i even hate thinking about my fish dying.
they may not be cuddly like other pets, but they are still real living creatures that WE TOOK REPSONIBILITY FOR WHEN WE BOUGHT THEM.
they deserve to be cared for to the best of your ability. if that means having to study up on fish in general, or a particular species...you do it.

Exactly!! People that say it's "just a fish" should have to hear about it from the fish's point of view!

I'm with you 100% critterkeeper. I think if fish had fur instead of scales, more people would care.I love my fishies as much as any cat or dog or any other animal.I hate the attitudes people have. if they dont' want to take care of the fish, they shouldn't get one in the first place. They are still living creatures and deserve as much respect as any pet.

I raise and breed fish . I find that if you learn enough about an animal (fish are animals too) they will give you joy and sometimes even babies. Yss I do try to encurage them to spawn in my tanks. And I have been pretty sucessful in having fish spawn in my tanks. I belong to several aquarium clubs, on line as well as in person. One of my on line groups that I belong to as a moderator is aquariumpros.com. I have only been raising fish for a little over 55 years and the more that I get to know about fish the more that I get to know that I don't know about them.
