Why did John Locke blow up the submarine in LOST?

Why on earth did Locke blow up the submarine? If he wanted to stay on the Island he was free to choose to do so, he didn't have to destroy the chances of others choosing to leave. It seemed totally unlikely to me and absolutely pointless. Capatilization is ruining the series, they are stretching it out to maximize the number of episodes they can make. It's all about money. Grrrr

I agree completely. It was a stupid and selfish act. He deprived everyone else of their chance to get home. I agree he didn't have to go back if he didn't want to. There was no point to that act, it was totally disjointed. I don't understand why the writers added it in.

Well it seems like you are pretty frustrated with the show. I don't think you are alone either. Many people I know have stopped watching it. I however am enjoying the third season, I think they are finnaly starting to tie up some of the mysteries. I think John blew up the sub, partly because he didn't want to leave the island, but maybe it's also partly because he didn't want The Others to be able to leave the island...Or bring other people there. I'm not saying it was a rational thing to do, and we know Juliette and Jack are not happy at all, with what Locke did. At this point, I'm just trying to have faith in the writers. I have really enjoyed this show for the most part...and I hope I keep liking it.

I think it made sense for Locke to blow it up- He didn't want to leave-- He knows the island is magical-- he can walk-- Perhaps he thought that if Jack was able to go get help then things would change and the island would lose its magic. It wouldn't be the same- So it makes sense from that standpoint. Locke is weird-- We've known that from the beginning. I wish the show would give more answers each week- while at the same time create new questions. I love the show- And I think this year is great so far.

He didn't want to leave because he felt if he did, he might become paralyzed again. However, he prevented the Losties and the Others from leaving, and with the latter's women unable to continue pregnancies without dying, and perhaps the Lostie women getting pregnant and dying, he practically condemned everyone there to eventually die out and the Island would, unless Juliet or someone found a cure in time, would be deserted except for the bones of those who lived there. And we don't know whether his spine would have gotten better and it was just chance that he was on the Island when it happened.

I have a friend who believes that Locke did not blow up the sub. If you recal, he was wet when standing on the dock. Why would he be wet when the last time we saw him he was inside the sub? My friend believes that he moved the sub some where. Then swam back and blew something else up. To make it look like the sub. Now I don't know if this is true. If it is, it would make sense. Get the Losties off the island and forget about the Others. But it's a theory anyways.

Thats a very interesting theory and yes it would make more sense. I will check back on the episode and see if he was actually wet. Thanks to you all for taking time to reply.
