I was recently asked this by my professor and wanted to post it here to see what kind of thoughts you have on the matter. mind=brain (The mind is the brain, the brain is the mind, they are inseperable) OR Mind and brain are seperate entities. The brain is not the mind and visa versa. Which do you agree with?

Hello IshidaMitsunari.... Neither and both.....the brain contains the mind but they are separate entities. You can't have mind without a brain, but you could have a brain without a mind. The brain is the physical matter contained in the skull. The mind is the conscious intellect created by the firing of a series of neurons. Or, I could be overlooking something and be completely wrong. Tom

I think the brain refers to the physical aspect, meaning the actual gray matter. The mind is the abstract counterpart, which is the totality of intellectual processes, such as thinking, imagining, rationalizing, visualizing, etc that take place in the brain. It also encompasses consciousness and perception. The mind is the result of having a brain. Therefore, they are separate entities but coexistent.
