The Fur Trade: Animals Die Cruelly for One's Vanity

I seem to initiate these heavy-duty discussions but I just had to start this -- In a society where we have os many options in the kind of clothing we wear, why is it some people will still insist on buying clothing that are made from the fur of animals? Is this really necessary? I can in all honesty say that in all my life I never once worn a fur coat, nor worn anything that has fur trim. I just think there are better choices out there, Every time I see a person wear that luxurious to the floor mink coat I literally want to scream. Do people realize just what goes on in the fur trade or what goes behind the scenes and of the cruel manner of just HOW these animals are killed to supply the fur trade for one's vanity...and yes, that is exactly what it is...vanity. Also, do these people realize just how many animals have to die just to make one coat? I don't think so. Also, for some bizarre reason a person seems to think that to measure one's wealth, is to acquire a fur coat. Of course, they might rationalize that many of these animals are breed on farms to raise these animals for the fur trade...but do they really think that the animals are killed any more humanely than the ones that are caught in the wild and often die an agonizing death in steel traps? Also, how many people who do buy fur clothing, even if it's just trim that many times the fur isn't mink, or chincilla or raccoon, but cats and dogs?? Oh yes, folks many of the fur trim is from the hides of cats and dogs. I came across this webiste from Peta, which shows videos first hand of what goes on in the fur trade, and it is absolutely digusting..they show how the animals suffer horrendous agonizing deaths just to feed the vanity of those who insist on wearing fur, and in effect support the deaths of these animals...I couldn't even bring myself to watch the video about the cats and dogs...But in any event, all I can say, is that the fur looks much better on the original owner http://furisdead.com/index.asp

I for one would never feel comfortable in any fur. I have never wore fur and never given fur to any of my children both now grown up, and still dont wear furs. Although I do eat a little meat for my iron count, I love animals and would sooner see them running free rather than being tortured for thier furs and the likes. Pauline

Ah proof that MyLot gives more points to those with the correct politically correct view. Well it could be that people wear fur because they live in cold countries. i mean try walking around in a cloth coat or a heavy down filled coat in minus 40 degree weather. We all could move to warmer climates. In fact, I would probably be happy living in Arizona, or Texas. And why do you listen to Peta? They think we all should become vegans and if they had their way, wild animals would be roaming our streets attacking our children, dogs and cats would get more rights that people and kept in luxury so that we have to use poison to kill rats and mice. Man was given dominion over the animals who unlike us do not feel pain with the same intensity. The way they kill the animals are regulated. By the way, I do not own a fur coat, my grandmother had a mink collar, but somehow when it gets really cold, I wish I had one instead of the padded vinyl half coat I had.

You're missing the point..both of you...I could MAYBE agree that if a person lives in an extreme cold weather condition might have some, I say some justification about wearing fur...but I'm talking more about the mindless idiots who what to wear fur as part of a status thing--to show off one's wealth ... and as such are perpetuating the need for the fur industry at large for what it is. ..a barbaric slaughtering of animals without the dire real necessity to do so. Many of the animals are skinned of their fur while still half alive. And the method of killing the animals is also barbaric since heaven forbid one can't damage the precious fur!!

No I don't wear fur, never have and never would. Frankly the thought of wearing it is disgusting and the justifications that people try to make for wearing it are just pathetic. There are enough manmade fibres around (many of them much warmer than fur if people are worried about getting cold!) to make it unnecessary for anyone in the Western World to wear clothing made from real fur. If people wear fur because they think it makes them look elegant or wealthy or glamorous or any of those other things I would say they are fairly deluded. What it actually makes them look is sleazy! As the slogan goes : "It takes up to 40 dumb animals to make a fur coat but only one to wear it"

I totally agree with you and have said the same things before. It's insane to think of all those poor animals have to die just so one can flaunt they're wealth. I refuse to buy anything that has real fur on it. I do have a couple of coats with fur trim - but it's not real fur. And it's so hard not to find a nicer looking coat with out them! I would rather they didn't have them on it. When it come to leather though I feel differently about it. Because cattle are raised and bred for not only food consumption, milk, but everything pretty much including leather. I think that is the best way to go about doing things. Just like the Native Americans did - they use every part of the animal. Not just kill it for the meat. I had no idea though that they use cats and dogs!! That is unbelievable - yet I'm not completely surprised. They'll cash in on anything.

I have no qualms about suede/leather either--and who knows it might be a reflection of my Native American routes..but to kill animals just for their fur...it's as barbaric as poachers who kill animals just for certain parts of the animal since they are considered useful for medicinal value..like killing bears just for their gall bladders--used in Chinese medicines.

I totally agree with you. It is very barbaric. I also want to say I'm sorry you were getting trashed in those earlier posts! They were out of line. I don't think so people really read the entire post and just take what they want and go with that.

I have never worn real fur, nor will I EVER wear real fur. I cannot STAND to see people wearing fur. I watched that video about the dogs and cats - to see the cat hanging and having the fur pulled off broke my heart. People need to wake up. Why flaunt your wealth by wearing a fur coat? What good comes from it?

i live in new england.it does get quite cold, especially when the wind is whipping up from the water. it's not winnipeg cold, but still gets below -20. the thing i really like about the modern synthetic materials is it's closer to the body and keeps more heat in.
