Is oil painting hazardious for kids

Whenever I have painted oil paints I found a suffocating smell in my house so I don't paint after having a kid. Is this hazardious to kid's health?

i imagine en mass,it's bad for anyone,not just kids.
when i paint i do it in the attic with fans going to push the smell out the window.it helps significantly with some of the stronger smelling paints.
