Does your child have ADD or ADHD?

I think my son borders on having ADD. I have not had him tested because I don't think he has it that bad. I've raised the question with a few teachers and I've gotten varying reactions from them. Some teachers treat it as a legitimate concern while others act as if it is just an excuse for bad behavior. What are your feelings or expereriences regarding ADD or ADHD?

I am not sure if my son has either of these. He isn't badly behaved anyway but he does tend to be overactive, I don't know if you would call him hyperactive though. I've never had him tested because it isn't really a problem, it doesn't cause bad behaviour or anything, he just can't keep still. I have mentioned it to his teachers and they don't seem to even notice. I think that the main reason might be because he is so well behaved that no one believes he could have a kind of hyperactivity disorder as they are generally associated with bad behaviour. I think there are people who don't believe it's real but then there are also people who do use it as an excuse for bad behaviour, or at least as an excuse not to do anything about it. I think it's only fair to assume that the problem does exist so that it can be tackled because that's better than treating the child as a "naughty" child because if the child really does have ADD then treating them as though they're naughty is probably going to make them worse and probably make them start misbehaving even more because it's expected of them or because that's how they find they get attention.

Thanks for your response. I think you about covered all the bases on the different attitudes and ideas have about it.

No, but my friend has it. Everyone thought he was just doing it for attention, but after seeing a few doctors, they said he had ADHD. He's a really good guy but they thought he was faking it.

My son is 8 and has adhd, your pediatrician is where you want to start. There are signs that you would never expect until after the diagnosis. Signs my son had were climbing, walking on his toes, continually interupting others and very bad sleep habits. You are much better of knowing and treating it. My son is pretty much a whole different kid now that he has been diagnosed and is being treated. It's rough but it can be managed

I don't have any children but I have ADD. I have immense trouble following a conversation. I'm not on any meds for it but certain things help me.. meditation, wellbutrin (I took it to quit smoking but it is also an ADD med.), and sudafed for some reason. I think it may be overdiagnosed. When I was growing up no one even knew about ADD. I was a well behaved child and I did very well in school but I never could focus. i would have to learn how to do things on my own. My mine would wander too much when I tried to listen to the teacher and the harder I tried the more it wandered.

My son was oficially diagnosed in 2nd grade. But we knew from earlier on. They just wanted to give him time to "adjust" to school. He is currently on medication and has much more focus in school. He also has a very high IQ, so he has been placed in more challenging classes, so that helps as well. I think you should get an evaluation done. The teachers fill out evaluations and his parents do. Then it is taken to a pyschologist and they determine from the evaluations and from speaking with you and your child if he may have ADHD or ADD. At least get the evaluation done for your own peace of mind, but you must be very honest when filling it out.
