i have 84 slayer in runescape, so i thought i would write a small guide for you all here on mylot :)
firstly, slayer is a members skill. you can start slayer at any combat level.
to begin slayer, you will need to visit tureal in burthorpe (north through the members gate above faladore). ask him if he will train you in slayer. he will give you a slayer gem (when you click on it, no matter where you are you can ask how many more monsters you need to kill and ask for tips). tureal will also give you your first task.
the tasks are dependant on which slayer master you use, but the way they work are all the same. you will be told to kill a certain amount of monsters ie: 20 skeletons. for each monster you kill that is your task you will gain slayer exp that is eqivilant to the monsters hp.
you will only gain exp to slayer if that monster is your task.
the different slayer masters are:
tureal, he is the easiest master, he offers very low lvl monsters to train on, and usually a low number of them to kill, this is ok if you are a low lvl character, as there is minimal chance of dying.
mazchana, he is located in canifis (noth east corner of the village), he offers low lvl monsters, but generally more of them per task, alot of his tasks are located in or around canifis, though he does offer others occasionally.
vanakka, he is located in edgevil dungeon, just before the zombies. vanakka offers medium lvl tasks, and generally gives out tasks that require you to kill many (100+ of the same monster). vanakka is a very good master for combat lvls 60+ (i will even use him sometimes still and i am lvl 115).
chealdar, she is located in zanaris (need to complete lost city to gain entry). she only takes on people who have 50 slayer or above, she can give pretty hard tasks, but the exp gain can be woth it sometimes.
duradel, he is in shilo village, he offers the hardest tasks available in game and only takes on people with 100+ combat.
if at any time you get a task that you cannot complete, you can change it providing it was not set by tureal. to change a task you must visit tureal and ask for a new assignment, he will ask if you want to change your current one. the task you get from him cannot be changed.
there are some exceptions to this, one being that if the monster you are set to fight is of low lvl, tureal will then not change your task (ie: kalphites, as the lowest lvl kalphite is lvl 28).
tureal will never give out killerwatts as a task as jagex made sure that people can change this task if need be (the area they are in is constantly flasy, and there fore unsuitable for epileptics).
i hope this little guide has been helpful :)

good luck with getting 85 :) it can seem a little hard sometimes, but remember, it really helps you combat lvls too, so you are actually multi tasking :D
and thank you for wishing me luck with getting 99, i am actually only after getting to 90 for the momnet, but 99 for the cape would be great :P

Thanks and I'm sure to try this guide out when I get members back. Thanks for posting it in such a clear way. All the other guides just get me more confused. But yours helped me get the concept of slayer. Thanks Bobbyjoe143
