A very basic foundation of marriage should be trust and love. But for a good marriage, I would say be compatible is crucial. Sometimes love by itself can hardly overcome the conflict between a couple in the long run, although it might work at the beginning. Be incompatible, or too much different is always the major reason a couple separated although they still love each other.
A good communication is important too. With an effective talk, a couple can quickly learn and understand each other no matter what had happened. And it is always the first step toward any compromise and reach an agreement. Keeping silence and refusing communicate will very possibly lead to more dissatisfaction and finally erupt to a breakup.

Well, for starters, it takes a tremendous amount of, well, work to make a marriage work. You have to work at keeping the marriage interesting and exciting. It's also vitally important that you and your spouse share the same values; otherwise, the marriage is doomed to failure. You have to share the same values with respect to religion/spirituality, money, child-rearing, etc. Additionally, it's imperative that you never neglect your spouse or take them for granted. You need to respect and love them unconditionally.
