A few gray hairs coming through...Now that I am over the hill

and many gray hairs are starting to pop out. I have noticed that the grays are coarser than my regular hair. I have tried pulling them as I see them but it's not working. (LOL)More and more keep coming! So a few months I have resorted to coloring my hair to try to defeat the grays but I noticed that the texture remains and it's making me hate my hair! It use to be soft and so manageable now it's like so unmanagebale! Sometimes I feel like shaving it all off and letting the grays win just to see what it would look like when it grows back (kinda like a Britney Spears thingee) Has anyone else noticed any grays and is there a difference in the texture? I can't wear my hair like I did when I was younger. I can't recoup that style and I think it's got to do with the grays. If so what techniques do you use to get them under control and hide them???

my gray hair - You can somewhat see the extent of my gray hair int his picture that was taken in May of 2006 when I was 29 years old. I have been going gray since I was 13 (when I noticed my first gray hair)
I just find this post funny. I'm 30 and have two very prominent gray streaks starting at my part and framing my face. They are about 2 inches wide. When my hair is down you can't help but notice them. I have been going gray since I was 13 so it is just who I am. I have never thought of doing anything about it

My mum started turning gray about age 20 or early. At least that's what I think she said. She hasn't done anything to her hair because she saw no point. It really hasn't been that noticable until the past few years. I think grey or silver hair actually adds to the beauty of a woman. If you can style with the grey then it can add so much personality. You can add to the personality. I personally can hope my hair grays as well as my mother's.

I'm in the same position. I just noticed some which makes me mad cause people in my family normally don't start getting grey til later. I had noticed that one of your responders had suggested conditioning your hair. I had a co worker cuggest the same thing. She said try condioning it 2-3 times a week and to deep condition it once in awhile and it should soften it up. Will try it and see what happens

i don't color my hair and I am letting all the gray show. I think a little gray makes a person more attractive. As you get older you will notice changes in your hair, your skin and your body. Nothing to worry about we all get older.

No grays yet, it just feels like it sometimes. If the gray hair is dryer than the dye would probably dry them out more. Try using a deep conditioner once a week to see if that helps. And in case you haven't heard the old saying, for every gray you pull out - five more grow back in it's place, so don't yank them.

I control my grey hair by colouring it out of existence. It is naturally coarser in texture than the rest of my hair - I have naturally curly hair anyway which is difficult enough to cope with but coarse curly hair is just a nightmare!! I've always had to use conditioner anyway but now I use a richer conditioner (specifically for coloured hair) and once a week I use an intensive moisturising conditioner. It definitely does help with the texture of my hair.

I started going gray when I was 16 years, just a few hairs. Premature greying is genetic in my family. In my early twenties there were more grey haris, & people used to comment on my silver streaking... as if! By the age of 40 years I was totally grey. Now, at 49, I am mostly white, but there still are a few of those yukky greys lurking around. I put a colour in my hair approx every 8 weeks. It used to be a semi, but now it is a permanent colour I use.

i will be 33 this July. and ever since i hit 31 ive started to notice some grey hairs. they are much coarser. ive only seen about 6 of them..so i get a couple of new ones with each year! lol hopefully it stays at "a couple" i havent even tried to color them, and other than in a ponytail or with a band i dont really "style" my hair. so far the greys have been in one small area almost at the front of my hair line on the right side. i am HOPEING that they will continue in just that area..then i'd have an awesome streak! totally awesome. lmao!

To be honest there is not a lot you can do about the texture of grey hair, but I have found that I can colour my hair and keep colouring it, the grey is hidden and tends to blend with the rest of my hair. I use a good conditioner when I wash my hair and I try to keep my hair looking as good as possible.

I'm in the same dilemma but I decided to just pull the ones showing. I noticed that they are not different in texture as with my other hair. I don't like to color my hair at this point because I don't want to hide them, I want to see them so I can pull them! I don't want to wake up one day to discover that I have a head full of grays. I believe the more you let them grow as is, the more they make the adjacent hairs become gray too. I don't know if it's true, but I'm sticking with the pulling for a little more time and will just see what happens. My sister uses henna as dye and really likes it because it's natural, chemical-free and it darkens the hair in the process.

Yes, your right the hair texture is different. I started turning gray early in my twenties and I don't like it at all. I have been coloring it for years. If I let it grow out I look too old and I don't like that look. Now that you brought up this topic you've reminded me I need to pick up a box of "Just For Men". LOL

I started going grey AND bald in my later 20's-- and you're right, the gray hairs have a different texture. Mine seem to grow in "wiry and kinky" even though my natural hair is very fine and straight. In my case, it was actually my beard that turned gray first. I don't know that there's really much you can do, when "nature" starts doing it's thing. I guess it depends what's important to you. Several women friends have cut most of their hair off and gotten "poodle perms," but it REALLY makes most people older (sometimes it looks like they have aged 15 years, overnight)... I'm not a woman, of course, but if I were, I'm pretty sure I'd just get into coloring it, and making the most of the result.

I started with a few stray grey hairs around 40, and by 45 was beginning to occassionally color my hair with one of the colors that washes out over 28 washings. I am still using that type of coloring, but I don't know for how much longer I will be able to get by with it. I may be about ready to go with a more permanent coloring. Yes, I find that the hair is now dryer and not as manageable. I had to go with a shorter style and work with the hair's choice of where it wanted to go! At least covering the grey is an option, not much I can do about 'the girls' who are slipping downward by the day! Ha!

I get a few now and then and I was pulling them out until a hairdresser friend of mine told me not to, because they will grow back in thicker and coarser. And he was right, the ones I originally pulled out are back and way thicker than they were. Fortunately, I only have a few and they aren't that noticable. I like highlighting my hair instead of a full dye job, then the greys just blend in.

All the redheads in my family go prematurely gray. When I was 17, my mother pulled three -white- hairs out of the top of my head and laid them on my black pants. I was horrified. She said "Oh yeah, there's lots more up here where those came from." So haircolor has been a friend since I was 20 and it got to be too noticeable. I stay as close to my natural red as I can, since I don't look right with any other color. I have to color about once a month, though, because my gray is not so much gray as metallic silver, and the color seems to fade from it much faster. I've gone 8 weeks since my last coloring, and I'm now seeing how much silver really there now - it's awful! And yes, the texture is much coarser. I spoke with the color consultants on Clairol's hotline years ago after I used Nice N Easy and it left the silver hairs uncolored. I found out that natural red hair is the coarsest of the caucasian hair colors, and that all hair gets coarser as it gets gray - so I was hit with a double whammy in the coarse hair department. Coarse hair is tougher to color, so they recommended I go to the heavier-duty products made to tackle heavy grays. I was 26 at the time. Controlling the hair and hiding the grays are two processes that are continually at war. Coloring dries the hair further and makes it harder to manage. So I have to condition, condition, condition. Hot oil treatments help, and every time I am in the shower, when I do the conditioner I put on a plastic cap and let it sit while I do all my shaving, then rinse. It has really helped a lot since I started doing that. I alternate between Pantene and Dove products - they just seem to work best for me. Your results may vary!

Hi girl, I know your trouble and many people in our firm also met such a thing, they are very younger than you...but many gray hairs grow on their head...many reasons..firstly,they have a lot of pressures....and can't sleep well..do many hairs will fall off...my hair is black(haha....because I'm a chinese girl!)but I have very little hair,I don't know why everytime after I washing my hair...many of them will go off from my head.you can color your hair, but do not do that so often, because it will hurt your hair, just read some books to learn how to protect it.
