Can you distinguish a Canadian from an American from one brief small-chat session?
I'm not so great at telling the accents apart, perhaps it's because I don't live in America or Canada. I was just wondering if the Americans and Canadians of myLot had the same difficulty?

We North Americans can sound similiar. Here's a hint. An American and Canadian prononce the word about differently. We Americans pronouce it abowt. Canadians aboat. What I find hard to hear is the difference between an Aussie and a Kiwi.

Depends on where they come from ... which part of the country I mean .... from some states their accent is very pronounced and so it is easy to tell. In others not so easy ... and that is more the case of those who live in the northern part of the U.S. It can be that their education or where they were bought up will influence how they speak, tone, accent and all of that.
Canadians too are a bit the same ... the west coast and the east coast have different accents. Some speak French as well as English and it does show up a lot. Of course it goes with saying that the longer you can talk to them ... the better your chance of identifying where they are from.

I know exactly what you are saying about it's dependent on where people come from. I can pick the southern accent of America in a few words. And the television here is filled with American shows so I am used to hearing the American accent pretty much daily.
