This was on a news channel I was watching the other night. It was stated that the acid in the juice would weaken the enamel when drinking it from a glass. They suggested using a straw. Well, if this is true, how would one eat an orange without getting the acid on your teeth?

That is another one of those imponderable questions. My thought about the straw in the OJ thing is that, number one, you should not be drinking more than about 4-6 oz. of any kind of juice daily, too much concentrated sugars, and number two, you can just drink some plain water afterwards. Families have drunk orange juice for years. I wonder which toothpaste company funded this study? Maybe it is a straw manufacturers idea. If oj is so bad for your enamel, what about all of those whitening kits? I think this is just an alarmist idea.

I was scratching my head when the guy said to drink the juice with a straw. I was thinking of the gallons of soda people consume on a daily basis.

I thought it was the news too. But then I realized it was for a toothpaste also.
But then I too thought about the whitening strips...which...I use!
Supposedly, on the package, it says that it will not harm the tooth enamel.
Now, if Crest White Strips will not harm the enamel...why does OJ break it down?
That must be a lot of OJ!!! And Garden is right! You should only have so much a day.

lol now this is a new one. I love orange juice and drink it everyday with breakfast. But I also love oranges especially clementine's. I can eat like 4 sitting down watching TV. So I wonder what can happen to my teeth. What about tomato juice? and tomatoes? HM makes you think. All of these alerts you have made you have to second guess everything you eat and buy. I just don't know how a consumer could possibly keep up with all these issues.
Great question hon

I saw that on a commerical the other day. LOL Surprise...I don't get to watch that much TV. ha ha
At first I thought...it is a good thing I can't drink orange juice.
(Too much acid upsets my stomach)
But then I thought...we never were told it was a problem before.
And all this time we thought fruits were good for us!

I drink orange juice everyday I am at school!
And, I don't use a straw because they do not provide us with one. :( Maybe I should start bringing my own.
I wouldn't want to lose the enamel on my teeth!
I thought fruits were good for us too! But, I also thought that the watermelon was a fruit. I guess that is what I get for thinking! LOL :D

Yes, we've had that advice for kiddies here in the UK for a few years now .. I should think drinking the orange juice is probably a bigger quantity of juice than when you eat an orange .. and many of the cheaper orange juice drinks use the whole orange and the skins contain strong acids ..

I read that it is true that the acid in oranges can damage your teeth but you would have to hold it in your mouth for a long time. Normal eating and chewing causes the saliva to form which flushes the acid from the teeth.

I heard of this before, but I dont use a straw, to drink orange juice and I also eat the oranges and never had this problem. But if you believe everything you hear we all would starve and die.You know that everything we eat is no good for you.I have heard that one thing is bad for you and the next time they tell you it's good for you. So I just eat what ever I want.

I eat everything I want, but in moderation, unless I have a craving for it, then I tend to overdo!

I don't drink much orange juice, I love it but it doesn't love me, too much acid for my stomach. It does make sense about using the straw, thanks for the warning, I will remember that. I usually put water with my orange juice, that helps cut down the acid. Oranges don't bother me.

Hahaha! That is a funny question!
How would one eat an orange without getting acid on your teeth? Swallow it whole? LOL
I have not heard that orange juice weakened the enamel on your teeth. Why do the schools that have orange juice not have straws then?
I drink orange juice everyday....without a straw! :)
Thanks for the information!

Great question! I knew that about drinking the juices; but sometimes wondered if it was really true until a dentist confirmed it. My mom always got onto me for "sucking lemons". Now you have me worried. It's one of those sleepless nights for me and I am still trying to catch up on back email discussion posts and this is where I am so I am going to eat an ice cream sandwich because I know it contains no acid and so what my uppers are false anyway!~Donna

Oh I do not believe this as I do not use a straw to drink my orange juice and it never weaken my enamel so I do not know what they are talking about I drink pure orange juice made from real oranges, as the doctor told me it has potassium in it to help me with my health.

While Orange juice has some acid in it, it is pretty weak. For one, many orange juice companies add water to the orange juce. Second, there are other juices that have lots of sugar and pop that has phosphoric acid that are far worse. If you limit your juice to about 8 fluid ounces, I don't think there will be any problem. If you are overly worried you could brush your teeth after drinking any type of juice. Have a nice day.

This is very interesting to know as I have not heard about this before til you mentioned it. I always drink orange juice from the glass, unless I am at a restaurant. That is a good question about eating an orange without getting acid on our teeth. Should we put a straw into the orange as well? LOL Thank you for sharing this and will see if I can find anything else on the internet.

So hillarious, I have been drinking OJ from a glass since I was 3 and my teeth a just fine. Scientists are just find every excuse to keep other businesses and manufatures in business and it is silly. Straws are a pain in the butt and I hate using them for I tend to chock while drinking. So I think I will stick with the way I have been doing it for the past 20+ years. But thanks for the post.

When my daughter was much younger, I used to hear quite often about very young childen who had cavaties. It was often said that it was caused by drinking juice, rather than cordial. Apparently juice drinks contain a lot of sugar which rots the teeth. I don't remember acid being mentioned, but that makes sense.
Parents used to think thast giving juice to kids was healthy, but were unaware of the teeth problem.
I don't really know why it does not seem to be such an issue eating fresh oranges, other than some kids "pig out" on juice, rather than real fruit.

I think he didn't move past April 1st yet.The citric acid in the Orange or other citric food is good for the body and not at all harmful for the enamel.I don' think he did his homework well.If that was the case ,then intaking it through straw won't help much as we don't always swallow the juice after we take it in our mouth and yes, just as you pointed out ,we would have to do away with all other citrus fruits ,not just the juice. Are they a straw marketing company ,by the way ? lol.
