well now how many cat lovers do you think will respond to this one lol. First your son's cats is beautiful. Now I do think cat is a very smart animal. First the are instinctively clean. There very smart hunters and I now mine know when i am ill and will let John know to come into the bedroom. They can chose which can of food they prefer in the cupboard this is a test we use each day lol.it is quite something to see.and yes they will do the typical dog tricks for getting tricks of rolling over/ My cat goes in my purse and takes the dollar bills out we get a great laugh out of it.

I like cats as well. I think I would far rather have a cat than a dog.. Just the cleanliness issue is a big one.

ethologists usually rank them lower than a dog, and higher than a bird, and the base it on ability to learn things that are not instinct, yes a bird has instincts to do what comes naturally but how does it learn commands etc. They also base it on the size of the brain, the bigger then brain the more complex it is hence humans are said to be the most intelligent of animals because of our brain size and developed cerebral cortex (higher functioning/thinking capacity)

I think the more you put into your cat, the more you will get out. I had a cat I taught to jump over a stick on command. I now have a cat I taught how to say Ma and Ma, Ma. I think cats are very smart. Treat them like they are and they will show you they are.

I think cats are smarter than dogs! Cats have a renowned streak of individualism, and don't like being "owned". They prefer to associate humans as companions and never as owners. On the other hand, Dogs bow to every human whim and are easily subdued when commanded by their owners!
