has anyone tried writing songs before? are there certain rules to it and where can i learn these rules? I remember reading somewhere that songs have certain parts to it and these parts of the song has different requirements to it.
i want to write simple songs for children and to accompany with my guitar (which I am still learning how to play!).
many thanks in advance!

Hi there! Yes, I have written songs with my husband. He plays the guitar and I compose the lyrics. I don't know about the rules since we do it just as a hobby and not professionally. I think that you should just go ahead and write songs and when it sounds right, then it's okay.

I mean when you talk about "rules" there are no rules but there are guidelines as to what makes certain kinds of songs. A professional radio quality song would have standard verses and a repetitive hook or chorus.
Kids songs aren't limited to this type of format. have fun with the kids. I'd still hit em with a catchy hook to keep em smiling.

you must have a good title
the chorus is the most important part, it is what your listener remembers.
the verses lines must support the argument that you made in your chorus
your song must have a good catchy melody and music
just keep writing, in order for you to excel in that field is you must practice, practice practice. and most especially practice :)
