Why do we scratch our skin when it’s itchy? Can you tell me what causes this irritating condition?

I believe that it is caused by dry skin .That's why you itch .
Plus if i'm not mistaken we are a lot like a snake in the sense that our skin is continuously being renewed so we have to shed the old and if its dry we scratch to get rid of it rather than it falling off unnoticed .
