Where To Start When Taking A Shower

Once we turn on that shower head and the water comes showering upon us, where do we normally start?
I used to think that all of us will start by wetting the hair, shampooing it. Then after rinsing the hair conditioner follows for those who use it. We rinse that thoroughly before going down to the face and neck. Then down still we go.
This was proven wrong when I had a casual talk with some friends. There are others who start with the breast area, others start with the wrists, and weird though it may sound, but there was one who prefers to get her feet wet first. Now, I have been wondering how others will consider this finding.

As part of naturopathy which is a system of therapy and treatment which relies exclusively on natural remedies, such as sunlight, air, WATER, supplemented with diet and therapies such as massage. SEE http://skepdic.com/natpathy.html "the best way to start a bath is to rub the whole of your body with your palms or with a rough towel. Start with your scalp forehead face and the neck. Then go on to your wrists and then to the shoulders through the arms. Afterwards rub your chest the arm pits and abdomen and the back. The feet should be the last to receive attention. keep your feet straight when you rub them." http://www.hashmi.com/naturopathy_treatment.html
Personally, i do the reverse. i start with my feet then going upward. Lastly, i do the rinsing from head down to the feet.

Ryanphil, you made me thankful that I posted this discussion. It never crossed my mind that there is a proper procedure when taking a shower. Now, I am learning and to think that I posted this just out of curiosity when I remembered a conversation with friends about taking the shower. You can be sure that I will visit those sites. Thank you, again, friend.

It is really amazing what simple discussions can lead us to. When I joined mylot, it was just for the fun of it. Now, my learning avenues have been opened. There are a lot of useful informative things coming around. I hope this is the same findings with you, too.

It's always the hair for me. It only makes sense. Top to bottom... so that the soap and dirt will flow downwards...

I guess I'm a weirdo!! I usually wet my feet just to see how hot or cold and water is and then just step into it and get myself wet!! I find I adapt to the cold water better if I start with my feet. Once in I work on my shoulder and chest first and then I guess I just randomise...

I noticed most of you starts with your hair. For me, maybe it's weird to some :) but I start by washing my face (i have to feel the water first). Then my whole body, scrub here and scrub there! LoL! and of course rinse and then I am now ready to wash my hair, then shampoo and then conditioner then leave it while I go back with the whole body, foam with soap. Last thing I do would rinse the conditioner and the whole body. :) that's my bathing story! hehehehe... this is amusing!! thanks for this post trinidad.

this is really amusing, there are some responses which really made me laugh. there are times when we make a post thinking that it will not amount to anything and then start learning about things and at times getting some perking responses, too.

Now this weird thing where he gets his feet wet first is the right thing to do according to a text message I received and from other people..I forgot the exact reason but it has something to do with the blood that runs through your veins/body..We should avoid wetting the upper part first.

then let's do it. ryanphil at response #10 has talked about this akin to naturophathy. i got a good lecture as to how to do it properly. then i also read about it to be better if we boil those orange peels and mix that in the water. like it is good for the hair and the skin. but that means that we will be using the pail and the dipper as they used to do it before the shower came into our lives.

I usually start from the arms and legs, and then comes the rest. I do follow kind of a routine scheme though! Anyway, I wash my hair separately.

I know some people wash their hair separately. Most of them wash their hair before taking the shower in the morning and at night before bedtime.

i always try to wet my feet first. try to introduce my body to the temperature of the water. atleast prepare my whole body to the possible temperature.
there are times when i start with my hair and i always get surprised on how cold the water is. and i hate the feeling of it. so, i better start wetting my feet. then if my body is prepared for the temperature, i wet my hair downwards. i start with shampooing, then conditioner then soap.

I don't know if I must give out a good laugh at last. You are the third one to have said that you start with the feet. But knowing your reason for doing this, it is different now. I mean, my attitude on this matter.

Ok well when i shower i turn on the tap.. by standing on one side so that water does not come directly on me.. then i put my finger under the water to see if it is really cold or very hot...:) then i put my palm under it then one of my feet and then i walk one step further and i stand under the shower.. the i take up the shampoo.. apply it, then rinse it.. then the conditioner...then i close the shower knob.. then i fold my hair in form of a bun and apply soap on my body starting with hands then legs and then stomach and chest and then my back and finally face wher a face wash is used.. after all this i clean my feet and then turn on the shower and rinse my hair and remove soap from my body..

Before, it was a puzzle to me why some will get their hands and feet wet first. Now though, I have a good idea why this is so. Thanks for sharing, bhawnam.

You are sharing this habit with iamin, chiyosan. I now understand that the purpose of it, is to get acclimatized to the water temperature.

I suppose you start wherever you want to there's no correct etiquette. I start with getting my hair wet then shampoo, rinse and condtioner ,then soap up with liquid body wash and sponge then rinse out condioner. If I shave my legs I do this at the end of the shower.

Yes, I get the picture. The climatic changes can also cause changes in some procedures of the way we do things.

I shampoo, then leave it in while I wash the rest of me. Then I rinse, starting with the shampoo & all the soap goes off at once. Now, I frequently follow bottle directions & soap once, rinse & repeat, leaving the second soaping in while I bathe.

Well. I do wet my hair first, shampoo it, rinse and then put on the conditioner. Just then i start soaping my other body parts, and just at the end i rinse the softener from my hair, because you have to wait a few minutes with it.
I also know that i have only thirty minutes of hot water, so i have to plan my showers carefully.

Thirty minutes is quite long for a shower. My kids always laugh at me because it takes me just as much time as you do. There are times though when it takes me a little longer. You know the time when we enjoy the feeling of water falling from head to toe as though we are enjoying a heavy rainfall? I get that luxury sometimes at the shower.

me, when im taking a shower im used to wet my hair after my whole body after all's been wet up i shampoo my hair then soap up my body then scrub then rinse then conditioner then rinse then soap again so that i wont get sticky the whole day. then after taking a shower and after dying up putting some clothes on i blow dry my hair then after having my hair blow dry i have to iron it for having that straight hair. and that's my daily routine for taking a bath and after having a bath.

When I got to be over fifty, I had to blow dry whenever my hair gets wet. Otherwise, I will suffer from immense headache, stiff neck, backache and chest pains. It seems I can no longer tolerate the lingering coldness.

I have heard a lot of people say it is weird, or different to shower a certain way. I would say that it is not weird at all though, because everyone was raised differently. I have for the longest time. I start by getting my shoulders on down to my feet weat, then I will wash from feet to head in sections. I am the only person I have talked to about this, that does it this way. Then again, there are a lot of people in the world. I am sure their are plenty that shower the same way.

You are right. This is the first time I have known about somebody starting with the shoulders when taking the shower. You made me smile while reading your entry. It is really a unique way of doing it. I realize now, that we can learn so much from simple discussions.

I get my hand wet first. Its more to do with checking if the temperature of the water is alright. After I get in, I get my whole self wet then I start shampooing. Next will be washing my face followed by the front of my body and the arms. Next will be the back then followed by legs. I condition my hair the last because I don't want soap getting in the hair and acidifying it again.

yeah you are right I am sure each of us are little bit different in having a shower.I start all the time with my feet to see if water is enough warm for me.then I jsut go up and shower my shoulder , face, nech and so.Also I didn't wash my hair everyday while I think it is not good for my hair.
