Shakira is the world's most famous Latin female artist (Jennifer Lopez excluded of course), having first arrived on the Latin music scene in 1991 at the age of 14, before having gained fame for combining Latin rhythms and rock music.
It wasn't until 1995, when she really found her groove (as well as fame and fortune) with her single "Estoy Aqui," which gained airplay around Latin America and eventually topped the charts across most of South America (and helped sell 3.6 million albums).
The difference between Shakira and her contemporaries? Her songs are about survival and being alive, and involve self-analysis. Think of her as a Spanish Alanis Morissette. The result was a hit with females, and a hit with males, who love Shakira's aggressiveness. Okay, and the way she moves....
