Why are so many people concerned with the number of facebook friends they have?

I have been a member of facebook for quite a while. I have notice that many of my associates are very concerned with their friend count on facebook. Personally I could care less how many friends I may or may not have. How about...

ronpimeh i think it is the kind of friends that count and not the number, but many people love to be popular. I think that is the main reason;popularity.
