Can 2 Computers be connected directly for LAN?

I have 2 computers at home with win xp.. i need them to be connected for sharing data both have LAN cards.. can i just connect them with just the cable? do i need an Hub,switch? is there a way to connect them without the Hub?

roshan900 thanx ppl im gonna try it.. i have a 1 gbps lan card, so i would rather use that..than a USB
