DIY wall ideas

I am considering using paint sticks for a stained affect for the wall on my bar area. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Has anyone ever done this?

My father was recently diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. I would love to hear from anyone who has experience this or has a loved one going through it. What alternative treatments besides chemo would you recommend?
