Preparing to leave Goodwill this summer

HI everyone. Sorry I've been quiet for the past month or so. I've been dealing with a lot of self-care after work, besides playing with Bailey after dinner. I wanted to stop by to say hi and tell you what's been going on in my life since my last post. Work has been bringing me down lately. Though I've reached the one-year milestone this past January 30th at Goodwill, I agreed with Jamie and Danielle to stay on for 1.5 years. Due to some mitigating factors, things have changed. And I'm in the process of preparing to leave Goodwill sometime this summer. Mainly, it has caused me a lot of stress, mentally and physically. It's gotten a bit toxic with negative criticism and very little complimentary praise. Though I've gotten 3 bins every now and then, I average 2 to 2.5 bins every week, having one good day and three regular days. For every work performance meeting I've had up until January, everything was good, except for speed being the main factor. My supervisor mentions that I'll be job coached by my assistant manager every time. But it never happened. Yesterday, she brought in somebody from the Goodwill outlet store to job coach me this week on quick sorting. Too little too late. She said she wanted to try something new and I'll do fine. I disagree with her 100%. I don't trust her. I had to sign her freaking papers for every meeting to document my performance. It only hinders my confidence twofold. Last fall, I've hurt my neck, and my upper back by moving the manual pallet jack to carry a heavy Gaylord box to the back of the room. Therefore, I can't move anything over 10 pounds and have avoided doing the Gaylord boxes. I've told this to them many times-my neck and upper back won't be getting any better, if I do it again with my osteoarthritis of the neck and Wear and Tear Scoliosis. I'm going as fast as I can too. Retail is sort of out of the equation right now, except maybe cashiering. And that's another thing.... I've never ever been cross-trained once to be a cashier (my original goal), and be a tagger/hanger. Every time I ask for it, or put it down on my tracker sheet for the past seven months, it goes unanswered, probably due to my speed. And there's empty promises, false hopes, and no future growth for me there. I need to move on. Only my coworker friend Jessica gives me confidence, when I tell her via text or in person, how many bins I've hit. I'll miss the people there. But when I leave, I won't miss the job. I originally planned to start this process a month from here, when I'm on my only (and perhaps last) work vacation. But I've called OOD yesterday and this morning to reopen my case, and tell them my circumstances to leave Goodwill ASAP. I don't have to worry about emailing my application like I did back in 2022. I won't be with Jamie. Rae will be my new job counselor. And I'll hear back from her, early next week. And though I've texted and called Danielle, I hope we can team up again next week. I'll do my best to hang in there longer, and wait to quit my job when I have something better lined up this summer to say goodbye. Since October last year, when I've gotten work-related anxiety, I've been using the Finch app for self-care purposes. Sorry for the long post. I just wanted to share my rant and rave about my upcoming future exit from Goodwill this mid-summer. I'll keep you posted, and hope to be more active this week to check in with posts, toward this weekend.

I can understand leaving this job, especially when you have injured your back, your health is more important than any job. I hope that you can find another job before you leave this one.

That's my goal, Julia. And that's what Danielle wants me to do. Hang in there, wait for Rae and start job development, I hope it's sooner than later, so I can leave in July at the latest.

Sorry, things didn't work out in the long term there, but you did well. Maybe you need to try something less physically demanding. I hope you are proud of yourself. You did the best you could.

@KristenH Right, you did what you set out to do, and that is enough..even if ideally you could have stayed there long term..you worked your butt often and benefitted from the experience.

Thanks Snowy. That's what Danielle said last week., I only agreed to do 1.5 years for experience. I've done that. But my health--both physical and mental--always come first, even If I knew there's no future for me at Goodwill anymore.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is "move on".

So true. It started out fine, and then it got toxic and demoralizing lately.

Me too. I have an ideal job in mind. I hope my new job counselor, Rae, will help me make this dream a reality.

Hi Dianne. I've always wanted to work with animals. I would love to work at the shelter I volunteer at as a adoption counselor, or maybe at the local Humane society (the new building is been built in my town, and won't reopen until August), to be a customer service specialist at the front lobby. Maybe some web editing and social media manager too. I wouldn't mind getting my foot in the door at the current location either.

You have to do what's best for you, but a lot of what you percieve as toxic, actually could happen in any job. Job hopping isn't good either, so make sure you realize what you're doing.

Truth. But they're keeping finding fault with me, when I've done nothing wrong. Jenn (my AM) said I'm clocking in early again, when I haven't at 8:20 AM. It's always about speed, and then quality control, if nothing else. I just feel unappreciated, undervalued, and criticized for every little thing. But I don't think I can last there any longer than I have to, though I've done my 1.5 years for experience though.

Thanks Sandra. Prayers are needed and much appreciated. I'm just going to continue to do my best, and not my bosses get the best of me.

Something that's medium-paced, less-stressed for me and my back. It might work at home/remote, or at a location. Something where I can use my passions and culminate them into the talents: reading, writing, editing/proofing, photography, research, animal welfare/pet adoption, or conservation of the environment and endangered species. My intake meeting with Rae won't be until next Wednesday to get things started.

I hope you can get the perfect job your looking for to enjoy doing but these days it's hard to get ANY kind of "GOOD" job.

So true. I still have Upwork and Hub Pages. But I need something more than that.
